Hiya everyone.
I currently study at burton Uni and they have now told me that i need to find a mentor outside of the uni, this is not someone i need to meet up with or someone who is going to be marking my work, it just needs to be someone who i can show my work to and they can give me comments good or bad and help me to figure out what would make my images better... x

If any of you would like to take me on ;) please pm me , and i can give you some more details

There's a whole forum here ready to critique your work - had a look in your other thread, very nice selection of work, and I'm sure a nice Mod will shift it to the right spot;)

That would be the whole forum then!

Why not sprinkle the various sub-forums with your work and then select a couple of the more important ones for advanced critique in the appropriate place? You should get yourself a nice even smattering of comments and could even approach some of the people who respond for more in-depth advice if they were willing to give it.

Yes i know there are sites like this, but it needs to be one to one and by email, and i didnt realise i put it into the wrong bit :S oops x

My advice regarding mentoring is that you both have to be very clear from the outset what each person is going to contribute to the process and what you as the mentee (?) need to get from it. There are responsibilites on both sides, for example both people being available when arranged, responding to communications in good time etc.

Had we not just had a baby I'd offer to help, but at the moment I couldn't give the process the attention it would require.

If I were you, I'd seek out someone who has mentored before, or been mentored. That way at least one of you would have some realistic expectation of what can be achieved.

Basically if you'r close enough we 'can' meet so i can show my portfolio when i add to it but my tutor said this isn't a must but i must provide emails between me and my mentor, I have a booklet for my mentor to read and it tells you everything in their.

It is just someone i can ask opinions to outside of uni and they can give advice on how i can improve and make an image i do better, although this might go on for some time so if any one is considering it isnt a one time thing :D

I was going to suggest DD was your man as I think his club judging experience would be invaluable :thumbs:

Isn't this what your tutor should be doing?

I think posting on a site like this would provide a lot of comments but probably not as much advice (or at least as much detail) as you would like

I'd take DD up on his offer, he's very knowledgeable and judges competitions (at least used to) and is a top bloke
