Messed Up Big Time (I think)

I am in a bit of a mess right now :D

I was trying to organize my pictures and I renamed the folders RAW files were in, and moved them to different location. I re-imported files but I lost all my edits.

I think I have a back-up somewhere so I may be able to restore everything back to normal.

My question is... is there a way to move RAW files on the hard disk without losing the processing I have done? if so, how?

are the edit files [.xmp I think or whatever your editing prog calls them] still not in the location you moved them to?

actually, probably an easier question, what do you mean by re-imported them... how, using what?

What I did was:

-Remove folder from lightroom catalog
-Rename folder
-Place folder to a different location
-Import back to Lightroom catalog

i.e.
initial path: PICTURES/RAW/2009/UK Landscapes
new path: PICTURES/2009/UK Landscapes/Originals

as far as I can see now, there are no xmp files for each picture, but Lightroom saves the processing data in 1 big file.

Good news is, I found the backup and restored to how it was before I started tonight. But I still want to transfer the files to the new location to keep them more organized.

If I understand this correctly, if I just create all the folders I need, and then add to the LR catalog, I can then just drag the files to corresponding folders within LR.

aahhh, you might need an LR expert for this one... I don't use it, but seen plenty of people asking questions about importing and exporting stuff using it, so there has to be a way. Personally I prefer the 'outside processing program' way, cop and paste or whatever, but again, not really using LR, not sure that method would take te edit file with it. I know it would with ACR produced xmp files, thats it.

I've done this, moved stuff outside lightroom then had to use lightroom, find missing folder to resync it all. For the future it's best to move stuff within lightroom then it knows where everything is.

However, if you have greyed out folders in the library module and get missing or offline photo message, you can open up the folders, right click the missing one and say show in explorer, or find missing folder then browse for it.

Rather than me type it out, it's nicely explained here: http://www.peachpit.com/guides/content.aspx?g=lightroom&seqNum=168

When you moved the files Lightroom simply lost track of them. It still had all the edit data but nowhere to apply it too.

Now you can get Lightroom to move the folders for you,or if you've made a new folder, simply right click on the old "missing folder" and you'll find an option at the bottom of the dialogue box to Update Folder Location. Simply click on the new folder location and Lightroom will update everything

+1 you can drop and drag folders around using the library window in Light room and this keeps track of your changes. There is also an option to save your edits as a seperate .XMP file rather than keep all the edits in Light room's underlying database, but moving in the library window is easiest

I just got back home. Thanks everyone for the comments and tips.

My mistake was to actually remove the folders from the lightroom catalogue so LR couldn't keep track where the files were and didn't recognize them when I imported them back at a different location.

No that I have everything back in the way before, I am just going to create all the folders, and do the transfers using lightroom.

I'll keep you updated with the results :D

Thanks again for the help everyone!
