Meta what?

I'm sure it's going to seem a really daft question to you web diesigner techy types, but what exactly are meta tags, what do they do and what is the best way of using them?

Please could you reply in the most basic form as that is about my level of technical understanding. :bonk:

META tags are HTML (i.e. the computer code that is used to write web pages) tags that are used to include information about your web page.

The way I understand it in its simplest form is that Meta Tags generally provide key words about what the web page or photo or whatever it is your tagging, so that they can be found more effectivley when searching.

They are tags that tell the browser what sort of document you have (HTML/XTML etc.) what character set to use (English /French etc.) and basic stuff like a title and author. etc.etc.
