Meteor Shower

Yes
I'm sure someone will have posted this but I can't find anything.

Anyone capture the meteor shower last night...I knew nothing about it until I see all the video/photo's carried by the media. Spectacular from the North of England

Our new threads must have shaken hands in the ether as they passed! I'm hoping the show may be repeated tonight - and that the current clear skies remain so.

Great minds and all that.

For the NE England I don't think the weather is going to be as good as it was last night, which is typical....may keep an eye on the sky just in case.

I think there is a web site that relays info like this....I'm sure some knowledgeable person will post the link.

Apparently they were really good here.....shame I knew nothing about it :(

I saw it from Dundee last night. Didn't have time to grab a camera. It was really spectacular, in fact at first I thought it was a plane in serious trouble heading towards the local airport.

Apparently nobody did, and from the fact that they were pretty colours, I would guess that they are space junk, which would also explain their surprise entrance! If it's clear tonight, I may well stay up late (for me!) on the off chance they reappear and if they don't, I'll still be able to take some constellation shots with the HS30.

If this event was caused by the decay in an orbit of some space craft then there is a chance that some more debris may be seen as it re-enters the atmosphere, but I think the chance of seeing it again from Britain will be slim, though as you say Nod, if its clear, there be other things to see.

Thanks for that, Dave. If there's any chance of them being back, it'll be worth me staying up late (for me at the moment). The FujiFilm HS30 is a new toy for me and has not only a long end of 720mm (and is resonably sharp even wide open up to at least 650mm) but also reasonable high ISO performance, so could be a good tool for astro photography at a basic level. I'll find out later! I'll report (probably in this thread) on my reults and maybe even post a pic or 2 if I get some good shots!

I was fortunate enough to see it last night but it wasn't what I would call a shower as such, there wasn't much divergence.

To try and describe it I would say it was a basically a large single piece, a fireball, shooting across the sky, low and fairly slow with greens, reds and orange colours coming off of it.

Chunks were breaking off of the back of it and then burning away and fizzling out.

Probably the most spectacular thing I have ever seen in my life.

I wonder was it a single fireball meteor, these are rare but do occur. They will of lose material as they burn up in the lower atmosphere giving the appearance of multiple objects. Sadly I missed the event but it sounded quite a spectacle!

We had a great view of it in Dundee last night, it was only after it disappeared that we thought " why didn't we grab a photo of it"? We all have camera's on our phones after all. I agree that it was probably man made space junk, the centre of it was green which might indicate the presence of copper. I was lucky enough to see a meteor fireball years ago and it was quite a spectacle

i was at work last night and was outside when it happened ...was amazing it was a single meteor that broke up all over the sky ..managed to get a video of it :) ..(camera phone ....not the best but its ok) ....to be honest i was more interested in watching it :)..the vid is on my fb page

^ this - it wasn't a meteor shower, it was space junk burning up. Was another smaller one about half hour after which actually lit the night landscape up with its flickering

Manage to capture it in my startrails sequence, pic later :)
