Sorry if this is posted else where, i did have a look but came up with nowt....

Anyway, I read a lot about metering a scene and i cannot work out what it is that i am looking for. I know that i have three metering modes on my camera, but how do i know when to apply which to a certain situation.

When metering do i have to depress the shutter partly or just point the camera at the object/scene and in doing this will the camera suggest the best f-stop etc.

I am very confused by this and would really appreciate the help!

Thanks in advance.

There's a very detailed description of the three metering modes in your camera manual, or you can see a good video on the Nikon web site. There are probably some videos on YouTube as well.

Metering is live (i.e. you don't need to press the shutter release) and the exposure will adjust continually. Just look through the viewfinder at the ground and then raise the camera towards the sky and you'll see the settings change :)

HTH :)

Pressing the button with the question mark next to it on the left of the screen whilst in the metering options will also give you a bit of information on them.

Thanks very much for that help peeps...I have lost the bloody instruction manual but i am looking at the You tube link as i type, well almost.

The long haired guy on You tube explained very well! I have a little 'lightbulb' moment, will put this into practise tomorrow if the rain holds off!

You can download a pdf version from the Nikon UK web site for free - easier to read than the piddly tiny, lousy contrast, print of the original one :D
