Metz hammerheads and EOS digital bodies.

I wondered if anyone would care to comment on a question?

I have it in mind to use a film era Metz hammerhead flashgun on a bracket with a 1D mkII.....

I prefer this idea to using a dedicated Canon hotshoe mounted gun although I realise the Metz wouldn't offer ETTL or ETTL II. I don't really care and wouldn't mind using it on manual.
I have little experience of flash but don't fancy the effect of a hotshoe mounted flashgun with the possibility of hard lighting and harsh shadows.
In any event I think it would profit me to learn to use flash the old fashioned way.

I presume you would connect the Metz to the sync socket on the 1D or use a hotshoe adaptor, herein the question...
I've heard some horror stories about old guns frying digital bodies, is there a way to determine which units would work without cremating a 1D?

Thanks for reading.

:) theres a site on the internet (google flash voltages or something) that lists all flashes, then check your manual, it should tell you what voltage limmit your camera has... (from memory its 250v...but check) then start to think about conecting :)

if i can find it, il post up the site with the flash voltages on...

I used to use one with my 5D till it went pop fizzz one day. Just fails to do anything anymore! Boo.

Don't be put off by using a Canon flash. Several reasons why. It's actually rather easy to get the flash off camera by just using a cord. That way you have the choice of ETTL (which can be rather clever) or manual (which can be very creative) The Canon flashes can actually be more powerful than some of the older manual flashes. (Check the guide numbers to be certain) You can always add more flashes in the future and they can all talk to each other (can't do that with the old Metz) You can also buy (or make) a whole host of flash modifiers for the canons. Beauty dishes, snoots..... all a lot easier with the Canon.

Having had both, although I had a lot of fun and learned a lot with the Metz, you can't beat the Canons. (I have Vivitars as well!)

^^^ Agree with Ali.

If you compare what the new guns do, and how cleverly they function with the camera these days, it's frankly pretty amazing.

I also think the lighting is better than with a hammer-head, especially if you use one of the many diffuser accessories.
