Will a Metz 45CL be ok to use on my EOS 7D? I am told that the Metz 45 CT could damage the camera. Is there much difference between the CL1, 2, 3 and 4 other than the price on ebay?
 
I sometimes use a Metz 45CL1 with my Canon 400 and 600D, without any problems, via a hotshoe pc-sync adaptor.
 
Do you think it would make a difference because I would not be using the hot shoe?
 
Hi, You need to know what triggering voltage your camera can accept. I'm not a Canon user but I have heard it is quite low, something like 6volts I believe. You then need to know what the triggering voltage is of the flash that you want to use and if it's higher than the camera can accept then it's advisable NOT TO USE it. Also they "MUST BE" the same polarity.

You should be able to find the camera triggering voltage in the cameras manual or from Canon.

To find the flash triggering voltage, If you search Google by tapping in Flash Triggering Voltages it will direct you to several sites that will put you in the right direction. The information you need is not on the Metz website

CT range is older. CL4 has the secondary small fixed flash for fill whilst bouncing the main swivel head.
If your not using the hot shoe how do you plan to connect? Does the modern camera even have a PC socket?
