Decided to have a go at this today, after having a bit of a nightmare with my 50mm at my friends last gig, shots that I know should have been in focus, ended up with some nice crisp shots of the stage

So I had a go with the micro adjustment feature today, and rather worrying (hoping you can tell me) the lens didn't really improve until it was adjusted backward by the full 20!

Pretty sure it's not a camera issue, as I checked with my 24-70 and my 10-22 and both of those required no adjustment at all.

Is the lens on the way out, kind of thought the adjustment needed would be small, but I tried all the stages in between and 20 backward was a definite improvement.

Dave.

Well, if you've done the tests correctly, and the lens needs adjusting by +/-20 before you see any improvement, and your other lenses are OK, then I'd say send it off to Canon for calibrating (it's not unknown for a lens to be that out of whack). But only if the lens is still under warranty, that is; if not, due to the very low cost of the lens, servicing it may be more than it cost to buy in the first place, and it may be worth investing in something else, like the one of the Sigmas, 30 f/1.4 or 50 f/1.4. Anyway, you saved yourself a bit of cash when you got that 70-200 at a bargain price the other week, so that'll get you started :D
