micro four thirds help

before i go any further im not being ungrateful i just dont want something i wont use!

for christmas my wife has bought me a micro four thirds camera kit and i haven't opened it yet as im not sure wether to keep it or not as i know nothing about them and its not exactly cheap! so i could so with some advice please :oops:

the kit she got me was the olympus PEN E-PL1 with a 14-42mm and a 40-150mm lens
now i dont know anything about these except that they fall somewhere between a compact and a DSLR? is this a good kit to start of with or is it something i will never use and it will sit in the drawer?

at the moment i use a canon G7 and although its an oldish camera it has proven more than adequate for the type of pictures i take which consist of macro and watch shots and just general holiday and family snap shots so is this camera going to be a waste? or will it incite me to use it?

now i know the olympus wont do macro shots without a macro lens and at £600 for a proper macro thats not going to happen so im left with either taking pictures as close as i can at high res and then cropping or buying something like this from ebay but has anyone ever tried this kind of thing?

or is there a better option out there for me for the kind i photography i do? like upgrading to the canon G12 or something else?

If I were you I would use it and show your wife how grateful you are otherwise you could end up with socks and hankies next year LOL
 
Keep the PEN. Buy the close-up lenses. Sell the G7. Give your wife a big kiss for buying you an awesome Christmas present. Never look back.
 
Cracking camera, especially if you will shoot jpegs, can also take the vf-2 viewfinder if you want and lts of cheap, good manual lenses with adapters, go take some stunning pictures!
 
thanks for the replies guys (well most of them :)) what would i need to be able to use cheap manual lens's on this camera then as the proper lens's are lots of money that i dont really have?
 
If i were you i would keep the camera and use the G7 for macro. You can get add on macro attachments for the pen series so that may be an option.
 
Micro four thirds camera can be adapted for almost any manufacturers lenses if you're happy to focus manually... may be worth trying to seek out a cheap M42 macro lens and adaptor?

I had an EP1 for a while, basically an EPL1 with no flash, and the quality of the JPEGs made me very happy indeed. The art filters were good fun too, and gave some very nice results straight out of the camera.
 
The E-PL1 is a very nice camera and I think, especially in less than ideal light, you'll see a big improvement over your G7.

AndyWest's suggestion of keeping the G7 for macros is sensible if you're happy using two cameras
 
what ronnus says is correct, also available are nice olympus OM adapters and then the range of small, high quality OM primes which just look right on the EP series (IMHO anyway)...
 
You can get the Olympus 35mm macro lens for about 200 quid new, cheaper secondhand though you will need an adaptor to fit the lens. A four thirds to micro four thirds adaptor, but its a cracking lens for the money. The epl1 is a good camera I think you will be pleased with the results.
