Hello, my 7 year old granddaughter has asked me for advice regarding microscope photography, she saw some images at school and wants to connect her camera to a microscope to take her own photo's.

I've googled it and i am know nearer decided what i should buy, we have access to Canon DSLR's and Micro four thirds camera's, plus tons of lenses lol.

Anyone have knowledge advice as to what i should get for her?

What microscope/adapter do you recommend, my budget isn't infinite lol

Hi Giovanni,

This can be tricky as you need to have a microscope at your disposal
and always the same. Makers are producing microscope adaptors tubes
that only fit one diameter.

If your budget is not infinite… in any case the microscope MUST be of
good quality as it will project the image to the sensor… no lens used.
The microscope should have enough candles to produce the required
amount of light for photos of "swimming" things without blur.

This can be tricky!

There are a few microscopes on ebay in my budget i just don't want to buy the wrong one.

When I was a student in natural sciences, I also worked as assistant
science photographer for the university. I had access to the labs gear
from telescopes to microscopes, a replica of the MIT stroboscopic array
etc.

The quality of the images is depending on the lens of the equipment.
Meet some people that have to do daily with the gear and they will show
you images they did, and the way they did them… what to look for.
 
It's fairly straightforward, a microscope and a cheap adapter will do the job. You just need to supervise the set-up as I'm always worried that if the adapter isn't secured it might slide and the eyepiece might make contact with the sensor. Mine was cheap from an eBay seller in India. I see there are now several different adapters listed now, some of which look a lot better than mine.

The vignetting is fake, this was taken with a 40D and an old school microscope. It's the individual cells visible in the leaf of a very small aquatic plant.

 
For a 7 year old? Keep an eye on Lidl. From time to time they have Bresser microscopes in and they have a little camera which can be slotted into where the eyepieces go. Not fantastic quality but enough to keep a youngster (or even a curious oldster!) happy.
 
Thanks for all the replies, still unsure what to get, if i buy something cheap and she gets into it i'll end up having to buy something else, yet i i buy something a bit better she might give it up after a day lol

IIRC, the Lidl one was well under £50 and has a couple of proper eyepieces as well as the USB camera so can be used as a normal microscope as well as an ultra Macro lens!
 
I'm off tomorrow so will have a look in Lidl.

Look on their website at their weekly offers. The microscopes aren't a general stock item and don't crop up very often.
