Microsofts crumbling empire

That's PC and Smartphones. At the end of the day MS still has a massive market share over the PC market. Smart phones maybe not so much. You could do a chart that says something like Market Share of PCs + Multiplayer gaming. Personally I don't think that would be meaningful, just like I don't find that chart all that meaningful. I'm not saying that for arguments sake. I'm typing this on a MBP. I just think charts like that can be construed to say anything you want.

David Toub's comment is bang on. From the rest of the comments on that article seems like a lot of negative feeling toward that blog and its credibility.

We all knew you worshipped Apple but I didn't realise you hated microsoft that much...

Either way it's a bit of a non story (although reasonably interesting). MS's computer OS market share is only slightly down on what it was 10 years ago tbh. Smartphone wise I'd be interested to know whether they included Symbian and Blackberry, which both make up a much larger share than both iPhone OS and Android... I'd also be interested to see who came up with the estimates for the 2011 market share. :)

Either way, most of the market share change isn't a worry for MS, their computer market share will be the same, and so will their smartphone market share (in fact it will probably rise with the release of WinPho 7), however the overall amount of smartphones has rocketed over the last 10 years (see Symbian if included, or more likely Blackberry) and as MS don't have the stranglehold of the market that they do with PC's their "market share" is apparently going down...

EDIT: I didn't realise MS had 95% of the PC OS market either... I thought it was around 85%, with 10% Apple and 5% Linux and other OSs.

according to this:

smartphone-mkt-share.jpg

symbion and RIM blackberry together make up 37%. Android and iphone 37%. Windows mobile 19%. When you said they make up a much larger share did you mean Windows Mobile, Symbian and Blackberry combined?

http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/iphone-vs-android/

also the latest stats look like the share is falling from windows mobile and RIM Blackberry towards iphone and android

Between Q4 ’09 and Q1 ’10, Android and iPhone’s share of the smartphone market grew by 2% each. At the same time, smartphone leader Blackberry lost 2% share to fall to 35% of all smartphones while Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS also lost 2% to fall to 19%.

Not sure where he got that data from.

A more representative/real market share worldwide (perhaps he was using US data?) is on the Wiki site.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone

Symbian has approximately 44% of the smartphone market, followed by BB with just under 20%, Apple at 15% and Android at 10%

As for the other post, you are quite legendary for sniping at MS at any opportunity. ;)

EDIT: I'm even more intrigued as from a random browse of the top results in google the market share of the US isn't like that either. Apple have around 20%, RIM close to 40% and WinMo down, with Android up a little.

EDIT 2: This is the closest to today (and within Q1) http://www.comscore.com/Press_Event...uary_2010_U.S._Mobile_Subscriber_Market_Share

Which shows in the US RIM have increased their market share from Nov-Feb, Apple stagnated at 25%, WinMo dropped 5% and Android gone up from 4%-9%. Can't see the Q1 data being that different to that.

Weird, wherever that guy got his data from Steve Jobs is obviosuly looking at the same place see here at the wwdc event taking place right now

so who is right and who is wrong? your sources or mine?

I have no idea. However most of the links when you type in something like "smartphone market share" agree with mine so...

The market share the links I provided also seem to be around what was expected a few months ago.

EDIT: What's really annoying (and I've found this in the past as well) is that I can't find anywhere that discusses UK market share. :(

2 things to note here:

wikipedia isnt the best place to get facts...im pretty sure it says that Joescrivens has APPLE tattooed to his butt.

Joescrivens is a massive apple fanboi

You're welcome.

hmmm, normally posters get repremanded here when using the term fanboi or fanboy but it seems that moderators are allowed to do so.

doesnt exactly set the best impression for the rest of us.

nobody else is such a massive, unashamed, rabid hater of MS.

/infracts self.

Just because I am a fan of apple doesn't mean I hate MS. I even use Microsoft office for mac and I love Microsoft surface. Like I said, I didn't write the article nor is it my opinion, I was just linking to it for interest and discussion.

but I stand by my comment about mods using the term fanboy/fanboi - not a good impression. :shake:

:p

True, but it correlates with other data from what I would call reputable companies (such as the one linked in my post which does market research like that for a living, which is widely used by blogging sites etc.) :)

This is why it's a bit odd. You have a massive company that keeps count of stuff like this for a living which does not correlate with what Apple are saying.

Hopefully there will be a Q2 release soon with the stats from the last quarter.

EDIT: Just to clarify as well, the reason the wiki one is so different to the other two (one Joe posted and the other one I posted) is because Symbian hasn't really managed to get a foothold into the US market, whereas it is a massive hit in the rest of the world and the UK. The data also seems to have come from http://www.gartner.com which looks like another reputable research company.

EDIT 2: Another reasonably well know site using Gartners data http://techcrunch.com/2010/02/23/smartphone-iphone-sales-2009-gartner/

And another couple that use other data (how reliable they are is questionable but still):
http://techstartups.blogspot.com/2010/05/idc-global-smartphone-market-share.htm
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/05/android-overtakes-apple-in-us-smartphone-market.ars
http://gigaom.com/2010/03/18/the-mobile-os-market/

That was just on the first page.

Ok I'll make sure I use that line next time to get away with it then :p

thats ok, congratulations on your marriage btw..

I have no idea. However most of the links when you type in something like "smartphone market share" agree with mine so...

I guess the Wiki article is using a different definition of 'Smartphone'. Jobs' definition probably matches mine and excludes any of the recent Nokia offerings - which are about as smart as a PE teacher.

I already explained why the wiki one is different. Symbian penetration in the US is tiny but much larger in the rest of the world.

The question is why the Comcast and other reports don't support what was suggested. They are US market shares and show Symbian having a tiny market share.:)

Oh and if you don't class symbian as a smartphone OS then the iPhone OS is most definately not a smartphone OS.

I was going to read that article then I saw the lead graphic. If they are trying to forecast the downfall of Microsoft by a 2-sample extrapolation of combined computer and mobile operating system market share.....oh dear. Doesn't even warrant discussion does it?

I think it warrants discussion, but like you say whether this is evidence enough is debatable.

The prediction in the article is that this is the start of them losing the grip on the market and by 2011 they'll be down to 50%

WinMo losing ground in the short term to Android/iOS has b****r all to with Microsoft's core business, hence their headline and 'prediction' is a load of utter garbage.
