What are my best options for a mid range zoom for my D300. Current have the Nikon 18-70 kit lens but feel I want f2.8 throughout. Also it would be nice if it was 77mm filter thread then all my major lens will be 77mm.

Guess I am looking in the range of 18 to 24 up to 50 to 70mm if that makes sense?

Sadly I can't afford the Nikon "Beast" 24-70mm f2.8!

Sigma 24-70 DG EX f2.8 - not the most recent of lenses but a decent enough glass, and f2.8, all for under £300 in the UK

Wow 82mm filter size! Expensive!

If you want 77mm filter size try the Sigma 24 - 60 f2.8 then.

Or the Tamron 17-50mm/Sigma 18-50mm HSM. Both are f/2.8 zooms, though Tamron is more consistent with their QC (but my Sigma is faring well anyway).

EDIT: They're both 72mm though, but they're wider...

I use the Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 and it cost 199 quid. I am happy enough with the build quality and performance.

I keep my Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 on my camera nearly all the time.

Very sharp and it's a Nikon so you know it's going to be nice/more costly

Not far of the price of the "Beast". Think thats a no!

I got a sigma 24-70 for my D300 this week, you can see some pics here from the first outing , overall quite impressed. I'm giving up with round filters I'm currently looking for a set of Cokin 'P' ND grads to use with converter rings to fit all my lens.

The sigma 28-70 f/2.8 is 77mm sized. Bit soft at 2.8, but stupidly sharp at f8

The warhouse express site has got it wrong then as they say its 67mm filter size.

Mine is certainly 77mm cos I swap the filter between this and the 10-20 :)

edit: aha, mines the non-DG version! That's why ;)
