Middle ground canon walkabout lens - help

Hi All

I have recently bough a 70 200 2.8 is l and want to upgrade my walkabout.
I am replacing a Sigma 18 200 DC non IS

I may be wrong but IMO, the higher end walkabout lenses would include
24 105 f4 L
24 70 f2.8 L
17 55 f2.8

After my recent purchase, i cannot afford any of these, as much as i'd want to.
I am looking for something a step or 2 down from those, but keeping a step up from the kit 18 - 55 (i'd also like it to reach 70mm+)

I was thinking of the 17 85 f4-5.6 but the reviews are not the best?
does anyone have one? is it true about the barrel distortion, major light fall off and chromatic abbrasion?

Does anyone have any other suggestions for a walkabout lens up to about £300? :help:

Or if you want 70mm - Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 OS HSM?

Assuming you use a cropped sensor you could try the EF-S 15-85 F3.5-5.6 IS USM. The copy I have is not far short of the quality of my 24-105 F4L provided I don't push its limits.

Oops. Sorry I didn't right to the end of your post. Possibly a used copy then?

check out the 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 Canon zoom
its a pretty nice lens not in the same class as the one's you mention but I used one on my film camera's for about 5 years and it beats any kit lens by a long way
the only thing I did not like about it was the zoom creep when pointing the lens up or down but thats a miniscule thing really
def a good lens for the money
 
We like our 15-85. IS is darned good and colours/pop are excellent. If you post process and have some modern s/w (e.g. Lightroom) you can get rid of most of the distortions automagically...

The 17-85IS a good lens - I really like mine and get great shots with it.

The 15-85 gets good reviews

The 28-135IS is def worth a look if you want a slightly longer walk about lens - I had one and was very impressed with it, it was the ideal range for me for a walkabout lens.
