Hi,

This is my first post although have been lurking here for a while.
Had a D90 and now I have a used D300. To compliment Tokina 11-16mm and Nikon 70-300mm VR, two primes 35mm 1.8G and 50mm 1.8G, I am looking to add a fast mid range zoom to my kit.

Ideally have some form of stabilization, but this is not critical, 3rd Party Lens are fine. Ability to use on FX at a later stage is critical.

Or is it worth adding mid zoom at all?:(

Thanks in advance for you thoughts...:)

Hi,
To compliment Tokina 11-16mm and Nikon 70-300mm VR, two primes 35mm 1.8G and 50mm 1.8G, I am looking to add a fast mid range zoom to my kit.

So basically you have all those and you want to add a mid range zoom? It all depend on what you like to shoot, I like to shoot sports and wild life so having the 70-300mm is good for wild life shots but i also like to add a fast zoom lens to shoot sports, which means something like 70-200 f2.8 is a good choice. I would look into sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM version. I use that on my D7000 and it works like a dream. Plus it doesn't break your bank as well if budget is tight.

Do you find yourself changing between your 35mm and 50mm a lot?

Personally all I have between my wide and tele zooms is a 50m prime and that works for me.

I don't do any sports so I'm happy with 70-300 for occasional use.
Also I seem to like shooting wide and tokina stays on camera most of time.
Like to use 35mm for indoors and low light but can't justify to spend on a fast midzoom.

Don't then! The IQ won't be as good as primes, the only reason I'd suggest getting a mid zoom is if you're covering events & won't be able to change lenses quickly.

You could probably find a used Tamron 28-75 f2.8 at a good price on fleabay or new for 260-299 pounds. For longer and a lot more dinero, the Sigma 50-150 f2.8 is another good option (has IS I believe).

Thanks for your thoughts. Will use primes for now.
Have a scotland holiday coming up soon and may be borrow my mates D90 for primes and use wide on my D300.

I would wait till you go full frame, before thinking of adding anymore lens :)

It is tempting to pick up used Sigma or Tamron 2.8 but for now I've decided, not to invest in any more DX lenses and give some workout to my primes:D
