Millau Viaduct

I've worked out that the Millau area will make an ideal stopover on something of a road trip being planned for next month.

Two questions if I may :)

Can anyone recommend a local hotel? We plan on stoping in the area twice, about ten days apart. We often stop at randomly selected hotels but would welcome any recommendations.

And does anyone have any experience of the viewing places for the viaduct, of which I believe here are five or six? Hopefully, we'll be there to take advantage of both early morning and late evening light.

I was there last year :-). However as I was staying with family I can't offer advice on Hotels. I imagine the best place to start looking is the town of Milau ?

The viaduct can be viewed from from a view point (ok that is obvious) on the north side which is accessed from an Aire (a motorway service area which can be accessed either from the Motorway or via a backroad and short walk. It is quite a climb to the view point and busy.

On the southern side there is a visitor centre, but to get close you have to pay. Photo opportunities were limited from the carpark. There are some roads along the bottom of the valley and a long shot down the valley might be possible ?

I got a few nice pictures looking back along to the viaduct from the back road. Otherwise unless you are adventurous You will probably get the same photo opportunities as everyone else.

Probably waffling now so I hope that helps?

If you go into Millau itself and then take the old road (pre-bridge) south, there are a few places you can stop for photo opportunities.

Depending on how much time you have and what your interests are, Gorges de la Jontes with it's re-introduced Vulture community isn't too far away from Millau and well worth a visit IMO. Can't help with hotels though I'm afraid as we have always camped.

Have a good trip
Simon.

I'd warn about straying too far from the motorway if you want to make any progress south.

The gorges a few miles to the east of Millau are absolutely stunning and you'll never want to leave!

We crossed the bridge in thick fog and could barely see a thing. There is a viewpoint on the northern side which you walk to from a service station. We couldn't see the bridge from there either!

If you take a look at the bridge on Google Maps and use street view to gauge the view from various spots you'll see that there are actually a load of roads that snake around and underneath the bridge. Should get a great variety of angles if you spend a half day or so driving about.
