This is my daughter taken today after school, she will feature quite often in this project

Portraits are not my strong point, but 'practice makes perfect' so they say.

If anyone can give me some advice on improving my portrait photography it would be very much appreciated

Looks flat, need more contrast and too much space above her head, Maybe zooming in on just her head.
My two cents worth....

I think you went too heavy handed with your processing - was it a photoshop action? LR Preset? Less is usually more when it comes to these sorts of things, and best to always use them as a starting point, and then bring them back.
I'd also get rid of the green circle / logo on her top - it sticks out like a sore thumb - either get rid of it entirely or desaturate it.

That helps a lot Thank you so much it was a LR Preset that I was trying out and it just doesn't suit my photos at all.
Much appreciated advise
