Hi there,
I was looking on the evilbay and wondering if a 70-210 f4 beercan would bee an improvement on my 75-300mm sony (entry level)?

Also is the beercan compatible with autofocus on my a100?

I also saw thet the zoom is multiplied x1.5 ?

Cheers

answered simply, yes, the beercan will be a big improvement on the 75-300,but you will be loosing 90mm of reach on the long end...

yes,it will be compatible with your A100.

the 1.5X is relating to the crop factor on the sensor, which all of the following have...A100,A200,A230,A330,A350,A380,A500,A550 and A700.

What does the 1.5x crop factor mean then?

Serious novice/newbie here

sorry if I'm being a bit thick but what effect will the difference in sensor size have on my photos or on the focal length?

A 1.5x crop factor means your effective focal length will be 1.5 time what the lens says. So a 50mm lens on a 1.5x body will actually produce pictures with an effective focal length of 75mm...or at least that's my understanding of it. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Does it actually make a difference when you're shooting, is it something you have to constantly think about? No, I don't think so at least.

So theoreticaly it'll be like a 105-315 on my alpha... correct?

So does the beercan have 1.5x less effective length or 1.5x more length on my alpha 100?

Seriously confused now

More effective! It's the main advantage (along with being a lot cheaper) of using crop sensor cameras.

At 210mm, the lens is 210mm whatever camera you put it on. However because of the x1.5 crop factor, it gives you the effect of having the focal length of what you would get on a full frame or 35mm camera at 315mm.

Hope this is helping rather than confusing you even more!

If you are looking for a beercan, try looking for a minolta body that comes with lenses. THey can be cheaper than buying the lens on their own, because people don't research so much into the lenses when they have a body, if they don't know ought about photography.

yes, but on an APS-C sensor body it has the same field of view as a 105-315mm has on a 35mm/FF body.
