The old minoltas are full frame so they work on either. On cropped they'll have a longer focal length. I use mine happily on a slr and a cropped dslr and hope to use them on a FF dslr in due course.
The primes are very nice lenses. Most of the zooms are too. There are few not brilliant ones so I'd check out dyxum.com for a good run down of all that are available and what fits what.

Not sure what experience you have with Minolta/Sony so a few pointers for you.
Minolta AF lenses will work on Sony Alpha mount cameras.
Minolta manual focus lenses (mc/md) will not work on Alpha bodies without an adapter and quality will suffer to some extent.
You can use both AF and manual focus Minolta lenses on the Sony Nex with the use of an adapter and get excellent results.

Minolta sold their photography division to Sony in 2006 hence why you can use any of the AF Minolta lenses on a Sony body as they invented the whole system! Concurrently you can use any of the full frame Sony lenses on Minolta film SLR's and the Sony APC-C lenses on the Minolta Dynax 5D and 7D DSLR's.

you can by the current sony 50/1.8 DT SAM new for £60 after cashback.
Unless you are planning to go FF in the future imo that's a better idea than buying a s/h minolta 50/1.7.
Minolta didn't make a 30/1.7 to my knowledge & a 30/2 will set you back quite a lot.

I'll re-phrase it then, any full frame non SSM/SAM lens made by Sony can be used on any Minolta Film SLR, but SSM/SAM lenses can only be used on the Dynax cameras after the Dynax 9 (Dynax 7, 5, 4, 3 and 30/40) as well as the Dynax 9 if it received the circuit board upgrade which gave it compatiability with them and also gave it ADI flash metering because it came out only shortly before they were released (but sadly most are not upgraded and only a few boards are left for use)

The Minolta 50/1.7 is a very good lens, but Sony make a new and competitively priced 50/1.8, which would seem a better option unless you need full frame compatibility.
Minolta never made any 30mm autofocus prime lenses. In similar focal lengths they made:
