I`ve been looking for a budget 500mm lens and came across a 500mm mirror lens that has an adaptor to fit my canon 1000d and they sell for around £75.00 now i know they aren`t going to be the greatest in the world but why so cheap?
 
well - it'll be fixed aperture - probably f8, manual focus, non stabilized, and the out of focus (bokeh) effects look terrible - highlights look like little doughnuts.

On the upside, they're compact, pretty light, and cheap :shrug:
 
Yep they're fixed aperture as Mark says f8 usually, and sometimes even f11 which limits their use to really good light. Best avoided unless you really can't afford anything better.
 
Thanks, i knew there would be a good reason, i thought my tamron 70-300 would give me everything i needed but not even close , and a prime is out of the question and so far i`ve not found something in between:shake:
 
If you don't mind being limited to using a 400mm wide open the Sigma 400mm f/5.6 HSM Telemacro could be an option. I don't know if there are any for sale in the TP classifieds, but there was one when I had access. There aren't any on the 'bay, but one sold recently for £62 + postage.

I don't think there's that much difference between 500mm and 400mm. There was a picture with all the different focal length frame sizes on it, I'l see if I can find it.

One of the immutable laws of photography I'm afraid, "Good, Long Glass Isn't Cheap"
 
they're cheap because the mirror design is a lot cheaper to make than a lens with many glass elements. The problem is the mirror design also causes the doughnut bokeh which just ruins your shots.

That said for £75 it could be a worthwhile stop gap while you save for something better

I use the little bigma aka the coffe grinder ( sigma 170-500 f5.6) its not the best on the market but its not bad - it has noisy focus hence the nickname and you can pick them up second hand for circa 300 notes.
