Mirror lock up

Can anybody tell me how to use the 'mirror lock up' feature on a 500d please.

When does it actually lock up ? i presume it is before you press the shutter button for a long exposure, or it would defeat the object of avoiding camera shake.

I've found the setting in the menu where you turn it on...but from there on ..im lost , haven't got my user guide handy to read up.

Thanks

Russ

Nice one, cheers Andy

Do you know if you can swing the mirror up via the remote ?

I didn't know whether you'd have to lock up manually then shoot via remote.

Cheers bud, i'll give it a whirl

On cameras with Live View, mirror lockup is to a certain extent now redundant. Do your focusing, switch to MF, I'm assuming not back button focusing here, then switch to live view, then trip the shutter, presumably by remote, as the whole object is to avoid vibration from the mirror, which using the shutter button would negate.

I have a question about mirror lock as well. In my manual it says that the exposure starts approx 2 seconds after you press the shutter.

So does that mean if I am using the remote for star trails where I would say shoot 100 shots at 30 seconds, the first 2 seconds of each exposure are waiting for the mirror to settle or does it add the time to the length you have set for exposure.

Hope that makes sense...@)

Russ,

Pop your camera onto 2 Sec timer (if you dont have a remote). Press the shutter and lift your hand away. You'll hear the mirror swing, see the counter go 1...2... then hear the shutter move/mirror return.

Hope the helps

Could this be using the 2sec timer method? If so, then the 2 second countdown should have no effect. That is only to get the mirror up and any possible vibration reduced.

Sorry Ken , I don't understand,

My understanding is mirror lockup is used to reduce the vibration of the mirror lifting when initiating exposure ?

why does it matter whether you're using the live view or not ? if you haven't got the mirror locked up previous to starting the exposure surely the vibration is still going to be there ?

Thinking as i'm typing..i'm guessing the live view mode lifts the mirror ?...penny drops i think ?

Cheers Andy, i'm guessing there's a few different ways of doing things, as always

Grateful for all your help lads

It will be 30+2seconds mate,by that I mean it will still only be a 30 sec exposure, the 2 secs is just a count down before the exposure starts

Yes indeed, switching to Live View raises the mirror, so a simple method to stop slap vibration. still need to use either a cable or timer to stop clumsy fingers shaking it though :)

cheers Ken, Brilliant point that only you have managed to point out

Every day is indeed still a school day
