Hi guys

I am looking for a general around the house, day out type camera and rather than using an SLR I would like to get a good quality mirrorless camera.

I know nothing about these at all, having been only using canon slr cameras for the last 8 years so I haven't been following the market, and seeing who are the leaders in this at the moment.

I recently borrowed one of my friends Fuji x100s and I was impressed with the images.. the only thing I didn't like was the fixed lens and the high price tag that comes along with it (considering this is a "just for fun" camera).

Have any of you got any suggestions in something of a simular build/image quality to the Fuji x100s but possibly not fixed length at a slightly lower price.. or do you think the fuji is worth the money?

The X-Pro1 is very close to being an interchangeable lens X-100S, but I'd suggest the X-E2 as it's slightly more compact and slightly more advanced (I have one of each). Both are good value at the moment. A refurbished X-Pro1 can be bought direct from Fuji (with warranty) for as little as £360 (body only).

As a just-for-fun camera, the X-M1 is also worth considering. It doesn't have a viewfinder but otherwise shares the same sensor/processor as the X-Pro1, and Amazon have been listing an X-M1 with XC 16-50mm and XF 27mm lens for £400 - when you consider this deal also qualifies for a free XC 50-230mm lens from Fuji (by submitting a claim form and proof of purchase) that's quite a but of Fuji fun for not a lot of money (relatively speaking). The XC lenses are slightly slower and not quite as fully featured as the XF lenses, but the results that I've seen posted by people using them are excellent. And as a general purpose around the house kit it will do very nicely.

I'd closely look at a used Fuji X-E 1 or a X-Pro 1, Im lucky to own both, I got a X-E 1 body for £150 recently, then pick up the likes of a Fuji XF 18mm or a XF 27mm etc...

Here's I shot I took with my X-Pro 1 and XF 35mm a few months ago on holiday, the colours and rendering are stunning from the Fuji X system.....!

When I moved over (from Canon 5D3) I went with the Olympus E-M10 - very light, in built stabilisation, cheap system to get into (link to CPB) and more importantly the m43 glass is very good. As a bonus if you don't like the O-MD for some reason you've got the Panasonics too, so you can change body over without needing to replace all your glass.

Lol, now I know you're already looking for size comparisons so you already know size is a lot smaller, but just for fun heres a few put together for size (link), I tried to get close lens wise, but worth noting the m43's are 2x crop - so 2.8 is really 5.6, but still very nice.

BTW @macvisual that owl shot is really nice :)

Consider a panasonic LX100, lots of manual controls, EVF and reasonable image quality. Good price at camera world at the moment £519

RX1 and RX100 M3 gets good reviews, (totally difference cams), ……… if you want one that will not be superseded too much in the next few years

I think Sony mirror less will be the future
 
Depends what you want to use it for and the type of photos you want to take, an alternative could be the canon EOS M, buy the adapter and you could utilise your existing canon lenses. Check out the canon EOS M thread in this section, at £199.99 from Argos, is a great pocketable camera that takes some decent images, ok some issues with the speed of the autofocus, improved with the latest firmware update, but an impressive camera for the money, especially when it was £700+ when first released. Quite a few of us have been tempted by the price tag and eBay deals for the adapter and lenses.

Not knocking the Fuji's, was tempted with some of the great offers over the passed year, but nectar points I got the canon for £38
 
Someones selling a PL-6 plus two kit lenses for £280 in the classified (link) if you fancy dipping your toes for very little money.
 
If you own Canon dSLR cameras why not try the canon M, with an adaptor it will use your DSLR lenses.

You might also want to look at the Lumix GX7 as its being heavily discounted at the moment and is an excellent camera especially as it's now selling new for under £500 or the Lumix G6 which sells new for well under £400 now.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the Canon M, by using you normal full size lenses you're loosing much of the compactness of mirrorless which to me is the point.
 
Decide if you want a viewfinder or not. Then decide if you intend to buy several lenses or just be happy with one zoom. In which case the RX100 or LX100 with non-interchangable zoom are nice and cpmpact.
If you do intend to have fun with lenses, your Canon lenses will fit other non Canon ILC cameras like micro four thirds, with an adapter. In fact there is a big thriving community of people buying old used manual lenses at bargain prices. That make great portrait, effect or macro lenses. See mu-43.com.

There are several EF-M lenses, having the adapter, just gives you the option to use lenses you've already got. The 18-55mm (part of kit), 22mm and 11-22mm lenses are really good. Depends what the OP wants to take images of
 
In my situation - a Full Frame Nikon shooter - I wanted something that would do as a travel kit to actually replace the DSLR, rather than compliment it, as the Nikon 1 system does.

I recently bought an Olympus EM10 and am really pleased with it, the image quality is really excellent.

The reason I didn't go Fuji is that the bigger the sensor the bigger the lenses and I was looking to save weight. The Nikon 1 system is great but the poor high ISO performance, lack of fast wide primes and limited DoF of the small sensor means it will never be a replacement to an SLR. M4/3 on the other hand seems to be a perfect balance, great image quality and shallow enough DoF to isolate subjects if required and a great range of lenses.

If it weren't for that I am shooting a mates wedding next year I would be offloading my Nikon kit.
 
I was the opposite I got rid of s lot of my Nikon gear in favour of Fuji X-Pro 1 / X-T1. Good quality sensor and fine resolution but give it a moving subject and the AF is vastly inferior so I went back to Nikon. I've still got some of my Fuji gear but it's consigned to the cupboard.
 
Would recommend the fuji xe2 as it's an excellent camera if you want to get into changeable lenses system. I find the image quality excellent and love the fuji colours. Lenses are more expensive than the micro 4/3 but I find the 18-55 a great lens and the 35mm I love and the 50-230 punches way above its weight.

If you want a grab and go camera I've had the lx100 for a few weeks which I purchased from WEX and I'm really enjoying it there's loads of manual controls and it's a photographers camera. Cameraworld were selling for £519 but it's now £619.

If you want to get not micro 4/3 then the Panasonic GX7 is a lovely camera which I Only sold as I preferred the fuji colours and the xe2 felt better in my hand. The gx7 has lots of manual controls,evf and touchscreen. There are some excellent budget lenses as well such as the olympus 45, 40-15. At the moment Panasonic are doing double cashback and you can get the gx7 with the 20mm 1.7 for £549 with £100 cashback making £449 which is an excellent price.

Also the GX7 is on Amazons lightning deals at 18:00 today.

EDIT: Was £554.99 today so the Wilkinson deal is better, unless you've got prime and want it next day.

Remember the Fuji sensor is only slightly bigger than your EM10 sensor. But because it is a long thin ratio 3:2 the Fuji lenses are disproportionately larger than the 4:3 sensor lenses.
 
Thats where the Oly's shine - okay tracking AF is not great, but single shot is good enough to catch predictable action easily.
 
If subject isolation is important to you, then the larger sensor of the aps-c Fuji does make quite a difference compared to mft. I ran full frame Canon, crop sensor Fuji and MFT Olympus together at one point and the difference was there to see. The super small Olympus and panny lenses are pretty nifty though :)
 
Aps-c is only slightly larger than mft in height though. Most of the difference is in the long thin direction. So if you end up cropping slightly shorter, most of that difference is gone. Yet the lenses have to be a lot larger to cover the oblique diagonal.
