Missing CD-ROM

I appear to have lost my CD-ROM. I've tried everything i know ( not a lot ) to get it back and working, but no use. I tried CONTROL PANEL>
SYSTEM> HARDWARE> DEVICE MGR> opened up the disk drives and lo and behold there it was.I've been right through the TROUBLESHOOTER process, no result, but when i open up My Computer ,the icon for my CD-ROM does not appear and it will not read any discs that i put in. Does anyone have any ideas how i can get it back. Oh and i tried SYSTEM RESTORE and it refused to go back to the checkpoint i wanted. Oh boy ain't life sweet :bang:
 
It's worth checking in the Event Viewer and see if any errors are being reported. Probably the System logs. Control Panel, Admin tools Event Viewer.

Not sure really, it might be the drive electronics that interface to the puter itself. As the drive is opening, it's pulling power fine. Does the PC detect the drive during the boot sequence ? It may be that removing the drive from device manager and rebooting will restore it's functions as Windows should detect it and add it at that point, but can't be 100% on that.
 
Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management

Quick way:
Start -> Run -> compmgmt.msc -> Storage -> Disk Management


Does it show up in there?

if so look to see if it has a Drive letter defined (next to the cd rom drive it'll have a letter)
if not right click and set it one

Nope, only my main hard drive shows up in there (c) and it's healthy.

Just checked in the Event viewer, and the only error message is for the "MsInstaller" does this mean anything ?

Also tried uninstalling the driver and rebooting but left with same problem.

okay, that shows that the connection between the motherboard and cd-rom is gone.
open up the computer and check the IDE connection
is the cd-rom still getting power?
 
With the pc switched on, press the open button on the cd rom to make sure that it has power. If there is, turn the power off then check the ribbon cable is seated properly on the back of the cd rom and the motherboard. Make sure the jumper hasnt worked loose on the back of the cd rom and that is is correctly set to master if it is the only drive on that cable or slave if it the cable is shared with a hard drive (configurations may differ). When you reboot, check the bios/setup and make sure that the drive is being recognised in there.

This will determine if its a hardware or software fault .. let us know
 
I must say my initial thoughts are that the CD drive has died. Happened to me several years ago. Might be worth opening the computer up and make sure all the cables are plugged in correctly. Might be worth unplugging and replugging them in anyway, just in case.

Might be down to buying a new one !!
 
Mine did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. Just vanished. the only way i could get it back was to do a restore point from about a month ago. It wouldn't do a more recent date. sorted it though and still working.

Is this a shop bought system ? ie brand name or one you have built yourself ? and is it running xp?

If you can see it here right click on it and select uninstall - once its uninstalled reboot the PC and the OS should re-detect it and re-install the drivers for you.

How do i check the BIOS set up gary?

Thanks Andy, it's one that i purchased from a local comp shop approx 4yrs ago and has worked great up until now ( apart from the old cockup on my part ) and i'm running XP PRO, i'll try this website tomorrow if all else fails.

When you boot up and you get the black screen with white writing, there should be a setup option there, usually press delete or an F key to enter setup ;)

It could be that the drive has given up through age (corrupt firmware etc) in which case they are very cheap to replace. If it IS present in the bios, physically remove the drive and boot the PC, then shut it down in the correct manner, replace the cdrom and make sure its connected properly then reboot again. If windows still doesnt recognise it, then I'd look at buying a new one.
