Im off to the lakes for a few days next week and was thinking about visiting Aria Force waterfall at Ullswater. I bought an ND filter some time ago but havent used it yet.
What are the basic rules of thumb for taking such shots?
The point of the ND filter is to give you a slower shutter speed in bright conditions. The point of a slower shutter speed is to give you movement in the water which becomes misty or milky. One thing to remember when you go out is your tripod because the rocks/trees etc should be sharp and in focus or the whole image loses it's impact. When using the ND go for the slowest ISO ie 100 or 50 I think with Nikon. Also use a small aperture to increase the depth of field and give you even slower shutter speeds. I would also advocate setting up your shot and then taking several with different shutter speeds to find out which degree of blurred water pleases you most. try from about 1/30th up to maybe 2 or 3 seconds.
