I want to take photographs at cage fighting shows. Should I use a flash when I take photos or not. I have been thinking the light might bounce off the cage and ruin the photos.

I can't comment on whether the flash will reflect back off the cage but you might also like to consider the effect the flash will have on the competitors - temporary blindness from looking straight into the flash as it goes off may make you very unpopular :D

You're going to need to stop the action and work in low light condition, so a lens with 1.2, 1.4, 1.8 or 2.8 (max) would be required.

If shooting with a flash then a diffuser will help reduce the glare.

Is a flash likely to distract the fighters?

Good advice on the lens, unfortunately I am a newbie and I bought a 17-55(2.8) for my canon 50d. It came to around 1500. So what I need is a lens with lower f number? correct?

there is so much random lights at these events that I doubt the flash would effect the fighters. Also most the time they are not directly facing me. Half the time they wrestling so...

On most shows you are not aloud to use flash. To be honest when shooting them in the cage or ring alot of the light is directed at them so light is usually quite good.

For in ring portraits and fight entrances you can use flash.

Try to contact the promotor though as alot of them now have dedicated togs for their shows.

Can anyone recommend a lens that I should use for such photos with my canon 50d?

A short-to-medium, fast zoom...dunno about Canon's line-up, but something around the 24-70mm f/2.8 mark is available I think...

your 17-55 2.8f should be fine and you wont need flash.
flash is banned at a lot of the events anyways.
Your best bet is to give the gear you have a go, see how you get on then you will know what you need extra, if anything...
