So, it was long over due but a week long trip to the Isle of Mull coming up at the start of May I decided it was high time I replace my old Manfrotto 393 tripod head with something a bit newer, enter the Wimberley MK II...

THEN, when that arrived it made me realise my old Manfrotto tripod was really due for retirement as well, so a couple of days later it's replacement also arrived at the door, something a little more sturdy and robust...

I've been squeezing every last inch of life out of my old (and given to me) Manfrotto setup for years so it was nice to finally let it gracefully step down and make way for the new toys...mmmmm new toy goodness :D

Has anyone got the Lens Cover tripod leg covers or wimberley covers? Thinking about picking some up. I've got some for a couple of lenses and they do the job well so figured they might be worth getting for this lot too to make carry etc a little more comfy.

I've got the wimberley II as well. I love it :)
If you have trouble balancing the lens properly, make sure the height of the clamp section is adjusted so that the centre of the lens is lined up with the vertical movement knob.
When it's done properly, any big prime will sit perfectly still at any angle even with no locking down.

Wow, Gitzo five series, chunky. No excuse for blurred ‘photos now.

Out of interest did you look at the Gitzo long lens head? I have no need for a gimbal head or the Gitzo alternative but I saw one at Rutland water last year and thought it was pretty cool.

As a first tripod “purchase” you don’t get much better than Gitzo plus Wimmbley, think of the money you have saved not buying all the in between tripods between where you were and what you now have! Most people spend more than you have and then buy into the top of the line.

Enjoy it.

I've got a 5 series Gitzo tripod and as my brother says "bloody hell you could mount a 50cal machine gun on that"

Yeah the old 393 did me well so I'm looking forward to seeing what sort of improvements the new setup will give. The Wimberley is much quicker and easier to operate over the 393 too so that will be a bonus. The tripod side of things are a definite massive improvement as my old one was useless lol

Well done on the Gitzo.. excellent tripods IMHO!

However, beware the rubber feet! I lost one of mine somewhere in Dorset and had to live with a wonky tripod for the rest if the weekend :'( I have no idea how it came loose but looking on the web it is a reasonably common problem. My advice: either carry a spare or check them when you close the legs.

Shout out to Bogen Imaging though... they sent me a free replacement within two days
