Yes
I just wondered if anyone had ever done this and how you went about sourcing the dress / models etc .
I'm thinking about doing it to add a little to my porfolio without the stress of a real wedding , but I'm not really sure where to start .
I may even post it up as a meet so that ideas can be bounced from each other .

John .

I'll keep watching the thread John...Sounds like a good idea

Thanks Simon , just need to try to get the little in's and out's from somebody who has already done it .

Maybe you could ask around your friends... or even on here... The price of wedding dresses I'm pretty sure many people still have them tucked away and might like to participate

I don't unfortunately

I'm sure that they have as my missus has , but I doubt it would fit her now been 14 weeks pregnant :)
I was thinking more of getting a couple of models so that they have a bit more of a natural instinct of posing and are wont get bored too easily . My other thoughts are also of approaching a couple of dress makers and try to borrow 1 or 2 for the shoot and offer them prints in return , you never know they may say yes  .
Thats why I'm really wanting feedback from anyone who has done this so that I can get a better idea of how to go about it .

I did a wedding photography course with Terry Hewlett, who arranged a 'bride' and 'groom' for the course. but of course, that costs money. Otherwise, a 'trash the dress' might be suitable, but usually only a 'bride'. I got a dress from a charity shop for £5 but no-one I know fits it ...

I have seen quite a few in charity shops, you really could get married on a budget. I'm doing a workshop in October where they bring in model bride & groom

I think its a great idea for practice and something extra for your portfolio but if your then going to use them to advertise weddings i think it is a little misleading to the client who believes you have experience in a live wedding situation when actually it was a few models. Not say dont do it i am saying be honest about it.

Most of the 'nice' wedding dresses I've come across are £80+ which is too much for me for a practice shoot. Oxfam have some amazing frocks but they are not cheapie cheap.

Nowt wrong with learning that way, but I think experience as a second shooter at a 'real' wedding is a way to take that learning and put it into practice. Having done a course, it made me realise just what was involved and that I didn't have enough confidence to do weddings just on the back of the course. Enjoy the event, there's so much you can gain from it.

I have no intentions of miss leading anyone just thought that it would be good practice as only shot weddings for friends before .
Ste all help would be appreciated with brainstorming ideas .

Maybe meet up or come over for a brew and a chin wag about it? My better half is very skillful with the old sewing machine as it happens and has some amazing ideas for shoots anyway...

Re portfolio use of images produced, I would have thought so long as there was some sort of disclaimer to say it wasn't a real wedding everything would be fine? It still shows what a photographer is capable of (but without the stress of a real wedding granted)

Hire a dress and a tux, go on model mayhem/purestorm - advertise the shoot on there - get some tfp models - ask a church/old building to shoot on thier grounds offer a donation if need be

bingo uncle bobs not really your uncle but an annoying person at a wedding.

you could even ask the dress to be loaned for free in exchange for tfp.

how much does a dress hire cost?

This is more or less what I had in mind myself

Definitely be honest - and given that I did one of these yesterday I'd also add that unless you want to bus in a vicar and some guests be very realistic with your aspirations about exactly how it will enhance your portfolio. That empty church is going to be a bit of a give away for any internal shots ...

I had thought about the empty church , would need to pull in a few understanding friends maybe even a dozen or so would at least add something to it .

I've still got my wedding dress and would love to have a shoot in it as I drew the design for it myself

Just need to be able to get into it again though and once I can, then I want a shoot

I'm up for that, we could do a 'trash the dress' on the rugby pitch at the end! :)

I think I have a possible Bride and Groom, I'll know more tomorrow, got a shoot with a couple of models and will be talking about it with them then.

Cool Ste ,
That would be one of the many things sorted .
Let us know how it goes .

I'd love that but not in my wedding dress! I don't want it trashed!

Sounds good Ste , sorry for not been much help at the minute , bogged down at work and home . Do we know her dress size ? need that before anything else .
