What should I offer as a modelling fee to amateur models whom I approach for photographic work? The work would range from portrait to nude and could be either indoor or location.

It depends of your level of experience, their level of experience and what you have to offer them in terms of their portfolio. If you have something good to offer the price comes down, sometimes to zero. Plenty will do a time for CD deal with you but you sometimes get what you pay for and there are many tales of no shows etc.

Have a look at Purestorm and Model Mayhem and have a look at things from their perspective. Will give you a good understanding.

No more than £20 per hour for a beginner up to Figure-Nude...

Some nice prints of the best shots? As amateurs, they're doing it for the love of it rather than for financial gain. Of course, they could be looking to get into it as a profession, in which case they may like a CD of the shoot.

Yes, I was pretty much thinking along the same lines. Personally, I've been a tog for over 40 years (not professional) but I am very fussy and self critical of my work so therefore the quality would be of professional standards. Thanks for replies.

In my experience they're doing it for extra pocket-money...no-one I've ever met models for the fun of it unless they're some kind of freaky exhibitionist...

Usually it's students doing this kind of work for cash: an afternoon of getting naked can earn someone £100 which is food for that week.

I always offer cash and a CD of selected finished images whether they ask or not - basic courtesy - I'm firmly of the opinion that TFP/CD is a con perpetrated by cheapskate togs to get free models...
It also sets things up as a proper business transaction with no pervy undertones...the model is my employee for the time she's working with all the attendant protections and benefits the law provides...
To approach this any other way is demeaning to the model IMO...

I have just joined Model Mayhem (as a photographer not a model :D) and there are absolutely loads of aspiring models wanting a decent photographer to take photos of them that they can add to their portfolios. Once they build up their portfolio and can prove that they know what they are doing, are reliable and give a good picture then they start charging. A professional experienced model could make your photos as they know their angles, know how to pose etc.
