Money *the* object lenses

Its gotta be the various Niftys and personally my Nikon 18-200 for which I paid £200.

Nick.

my 300 2.8...lots of money to buy but still a bargain

I have a couple of Asahi Pentax primes 35mm f3.5 (£25) and 50mm f1.4 (£49) and I'm really enjoying shooting with them. Nice and sharp, good DOF and they feel so nice and solid to focus. Might tempt me to have a bash with film.

A (well) used Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO bought from MPB photographic for £179.

Ditto for my Tamron 28-75 2.8, champagne on beer money.

Do you rate it then? I bought one last week for a wedding I shot at the weekend. I didn't seem to get along with it, but maybe i didn't give it enough of a chance- was thinking of selling to get something else. Reckon I should give it another shot [scuse the pun.. :P ]

Tokina 28-70 f2.8.

Paid £40 and it had a Canon EOS5 attached to it and 2 flashguns in the bag it came in.

I do rate it, yes. The only fly in the ointment is the AF motor - compared to the best AF-S Nikon offerings is a bit slower and noisier, but I can put up with that.

My bargains are a nifty mkII that cost me £65 brand new, and my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM that I got for £400 with a 77mm Hoya UV and postage too from here.

For me its got to be my Canon 180mm USM Macro lens. Expensive but without it I just wouldn't get the kick that photography gives me. When I want to relax or destress myself I grab it and go into the woods to look for stuff to photograph. Has a calming effect on me :)

Suprised thare has not been more people raving about the various nifty fifties available. I can't believe how sharp a lens that is so cheap (new!) can be!

Back in the late eighties I was using Pentax gear. I was given a 50mm f1:1.2 (read it again, it's not f2) for free. Amazing lens that could just about see in the dark. Helluva rare. Was very happy to get that one.

Came about when the rig I was working on needed to photograph something that had broken, they fished out their trusty K2 but it was unserviceable. Camera and two lenses were brought to me in case I could "salvage" something (I was the electronics presence onboard) Turned out to be nothing more than flat and corroded batteries and terminals. It was just as easy for them to order a new camera as it was to order new batteries so that's what they did. Couple of new button cells later and I'm the proud new owner of some epic kit. Happy days.

I missed a bargain.

Jessops had some Canon fit 28-300mm lenses for...I forget but it was way under £200. I hesitated and...they're not listed now... :'(

I had one of these and I sold it and I always regretted selling it. It was a great holiday and day out lens and I've taken some of my fav shots with it.

Second hand 80-200/2.8 - around £300 - produces stunning images impossible with any other lens.

Long and fast aperture can't be replicated.

Got to be the techfurb d3 for me!
But then the d90 has been left in the bag with only 3k shots!

Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM II - far better than it has any right to be, a great compact and light (yet well made) all rounder for my 5D when I don't want to lug around a heavy lens on it.

Closely followed by my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 - way lighter and 1/3 of the price of the Canon 24-70, with IQ which is 90% as good!

I would also agree that the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 is a belter of a lens for the money on a crop sensor body, if you can get hold of a properly calibrated one.

Probably the old Sigma 28mm F2.8 macro I had for my old pentax outfit, £50 new old stock..the camera shop selling it where a total pain in the ass but the lens was a good un.

Yeah, there's some lovely old Pentax gear to be had for good prices, and it mostly works with their current DSLRs too.

I got an SMC Pentax-A 28mm f/2.8 from my dad that was fun on my 400d - my brother has it now on his K-x.

Probably my Tamron 170-50mm that I picked up for £160 mint.

Thats an impressive lens 170-50mm :D  never seen 1 of those :p

Mine was the 300mm f4. With the canon vouchers, price match and 10% off voucher at Jessops (before they got anal and stop these voucher offers on SLR/lenses), I managed to get £300 off the retail price.

Value for money would be my 24-70L, but that's not really a budget lens.

The nifty-50 1.8 has to be my best 'bang for buck' lens.

50mm f/1.8 was about £40 (pre-owned).

Biggest difference between price paid and price new (now) is the Sigma 8mm fisheye that I bought through this site - I paid £220 (IIRC, inc P&P) and it's now rather more than that new and as common as rocking horse droppings second hand!

My Sigma 24-70 was a pretty good bargain when I bought it new from Jessops - can't remember the exact price but it was way to good to pass up. Maybe Yv can remember how much they were - she bought one a day or 2 later. £230 seems to ring a bell but I could be way wrong!
