Am learning fast from posts in here and now need to find out how best to look critically at my files to see how effective any pp is, I use a Dell 17" laptop and view my images on that, Is the native resolution good enough to do this?

Probably but you didn't say what your resolution is? My 17" laptop is 1920x1200 but most don't reach that.
 
Hmmm, Well, I dont actually know, So am going to find out and try the calibration thing, So thank you.
 
Not all laptop monitors calibrate effictively. It really depends on the type of lcd panel they used.

to the op, if you google change monitor resolution for xyz operating system, you will be able to find your current settings.

Never noticed how far mine was out, until I looked at one of my edited photos on my iphone :suspect:

The only accurate way to calibrate the screen is with a calibration device ~ Pantone Huey/Spyder/ColorMonkey/etc. I have seen several so-called on-line calibration systems on the Internet but they all rely on your eyesight to determine the adjustments. As your eyes aren't calibrated your screen won't be either :)

That will work a treat and at least sort out your contrast and brightness.

I do a lot of B&W so don't bother with colour that much,though one thing I have noticed is with laptops ambient light can alter your perception of the colours on your screen.
