Monitor Advice

Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie to the forum here and I was wondering if you could help.

I need to buy a decent monitor as I'm currently working off a laptop and it's a bit of a joke. I've been saving up some £ and am hoping to get a decent monitor with a budget of about £400. I've done a little research and like the look of the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi 23 inch.

Any thoughts as to whether this is a good buy for the money, or can I do better with my £400? Unfortunately there's nowhere where I can go take a look at one before I buy it so I was hoping someone had some advice on here.

A bit over your budget is the Dell U2410 which is a 1920 x 1200 IPS wide gamut monitor - I got one a few months ago and it is superb for the money and calibrates up very well with the eye one display 2.

Ive got the HP LP2475w and Im very happy with it. Similar specs to the Dell's, but better connectivity. Mine cost just over £300 as it was ex demo, but they are on ebay for £350-500 ish

All the monitors mentioned so far sound quite reasonable and they are all IPS panel which is very useful for photo work as it gives 8 bit colour rather than the lousy 6 bit colour and poor viewing angles that a cheaper TN panel screen would offer.

I've got the 21.5" HP ZR22w (1920x1080) and like it a lot, but a 24" 1920x1200 resolution could be handy. I'm looking forward to the time when 30" 2560x1600 IPS becomes realistically priced

I might do a bit more research into HP monitors - they must be popular for a reason! Unfortunately £400 is about my maximum budget - I wish it weren't!

I would set aside some of the budget for a proper monitor arm. A few years ago I bought an Ergotron LX desk mount arm for about 80 pounds, which allows me to position the screen freely - very handy.
