Just been looking on WEx and they have the Spyder 3 for about £65.....

Just wondering if calibrating a monitor makes all that much difference?

If so, how ofter do you have to recalibrate it? £65 for a one off thing seems very pricey, but if it's a weekly thing and prints are truer to colour than you see on the screen then surely cannot be a bad thing?

Do you print much? Do you see a difference between the colours on the screen and print? Are you finding differences in colours in day to day processing?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, or even all three, then yes I would suggest you get a calibrator. Do you process with a laptop or desktop/LCD?

My calibrator (Pantone Huey Pro) is connected up to my Mac when I use my external monitor - it constantly checks ambient light and calibrates as it goes. It also does a weekly check automatically.

As has been said, it depends on what your doing and what you need. I use the Spyder 3 Pro to make sure my PC and laptop are giving the same results (colourwise), and to hopefully be sure that what I post on TP looks the same to other members as it does to me,
I check calibration every month when I remember, and yes, I did find quite a difference after I first calibrated.

I'll go halves with you if it sweetens the deal any?

If you buy it on your own, you know I'll end up stealing it off you anyway!! :naughty:

Damien - deal! I shall be at Wex's door with a battering ram in the morning....... or maybe I should go there now with the battering ram and get it for free!

Impspeed -

Do you print much?

Yes. On a Canon Pixma 3600i jobbie. Often A4.........

Do you see a difference between the colours on the screen and print?

Yes. But then I see differences on the screen (22" LCD) depending on if i look up / at / down at the monitor............

Are you finding differences in colours in day to day processing?

Only when changing paper........... I think........

Haven't got the best eye for tones......... and also don't understand whence the monitor is calibrated it tells the printer what to do as well.....

When you are doing PP, are you making small changes to WB, saturation, etc.. I know I do.

You may be making 1 or 2 % changes to these settings using a monitor that is out of calibration by 5% ..!!!

It is not a 1 off spend of £65, you should recalibrate every 6 weeks or so.

I not think it is calibrating as it goes just adjusting for ambient light not the same thing.....

Sorry, but in the words of the best known Spanish waiter of all time..... ¿Qué?

The Huey Pro changes the monitor dependant on the ambient light, which is not the same as calibrating a monitor, tbh it is more of gimmick, you need your monitor to look the same every time, rather than constantly changing. If it was an essential feature all of the high end calibration devices would have one, rather than just a low end one.

well went and got a Spyder express today - gone half with Slimbert (so far) - I am sure if any localish TP'ers want to calibrate their monitor, we can be accommodating!

Have calibrated my monitor, and seems to make a bit of a difference - more contrast and more vivid colours Not printed anything off yet. Will be interesting to see - may have to do later when SWMBO is watching some Sunday night crap on the box!

As a major share holder in this product, I demand that you bring it round to my house immediately so I can fiddle with it!!!!

I dont think you guys will regret buying it & wonder why you didnt do it years ago. Next it will show you need good profiles for your printer
