Hi. At the start, let's say that I *cannot* afford more than maybe £120 so please, no links to things that are going to make me drool and consider selling the children! I can get some reasonable-looking models new for that price I know...


I am after a 22" or more monitor and there are several on Ebay I could probably afford, are there any brands I should avoid does anyone know? I am looking at things like brightness fall-off, basic reliability, dead pixies and so on. Right now I am looking at viewsonic and asus offerings but there may be more to come!

Also, currently I run two monitors and would like to add a third, any pointers to a way of doing this? My current card has two outputs, and it disables the onboard VGA so I either need to ditch it and get another with three, find a way to re-enable the onboard VGA, or ditch #3 monitor :(

Neil, always been scared of Dell...

Ali, it's a mini, only got one PCI and an AGP, though I realise having a TV card in the PCI slot is maybe a bit OTT - but hey, my computer's not in the room where the big TV is!

I may need a new system complete actually, the more I think about it this one os woefully (and I mean woefully) out of date. Not sure I can afford the expense though :(

re: dell 2209wa, just been looking - they do look ideal don't they? £230 new may mean s/h is going to break the bank though :(
 
To be honest, not sure you really need 3 monitors- studies have proved for most uses, that this is more inefficient than using 2. Maybe you should spend the money on a larger monitor to replace what you currently have?

Just a suggestion.
 
Not sure why you want 3 monitors. Most software ( like Photoshop or Lightroom) will let you span over two, but I don't know of any that'll span over three. If you just want to repeat one then you could opt got a VGA splitter. Just Google VGA spliter and you'll get loads of hits.
 
Ali, OK yes, maybe two is optimum (very handy for LR as Chappers says) and you are probably right, but I would still need to ditch the 15", move the 18.5" over and get a new 22" for processing though. In fact, the more I think about it the only reason I want three is because it looks cool :D Not really a good enough reason so yes, you are correct then. That covers the lack of a spare port issue then! See, already saved a wad and it's only been 10 minutes!

Hi Rob - looks good, it's the same price on Ebay (inc delivery = £120) and oddly, I have £25 voucher for use on Ebay also :D

I shall look into it - unless anyone can tell me anything nasty about this monitor?

I would want a DVI connector which that monitor is lacking.
 
My current card has both VGA and DVI outputs (plus AV) and an adapter is only 99p, if that's the worst that can be said for this one, I may go for it... unless the lack of dvi port is more ominous than I think it is?

I just bought this one http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/Monitors/22inchMonitors/Novatech/NOV-HI221.html (but doesn't come with a dvi cable so haven't used it yet, doh!)

Which is actually this Hanns G http://www.otest.co.uk/a/monitor/magazine/macformat-10-2009/182975.html the only difference being the box.

All of the cheap screens use similar panels, the only difference being the look and connectivity. I would rather have a DVI connector as future proof as it will accept HDMI with an adapter so can be used as a TV if I ever want to. :)
 
If you have not bought yet, have a look at the specs for the Asus VH222H. Bought one last year and it has all the Bought one last year and it has all the common and individual connectors (so you dont need adapters or convertors) = VGA, DVI and HDMI and claims to be true HD 1080p for a 22" monitor. A neighbour also decided to buy one because of the connections and the price. It was £150 last year.
