Quick (and probably dumb) question - if your monitor is a 10 year old CRT and doesn't look great at the best of times, am I on a hiding to nothing to even consider trying to post process RAW images to get a better result than the camera jpeg?

Was going to look at a new monitor but it was a case of DSLR or monitor :)

Camera fist as monitor no good without one..... but monitor will need changing but you can do this later on...

thanks for the reply - i know i need a new monitor. the question was whether I'm wasting my time trying to improve the photos in post processing on this old monitor?

Yes when you come to print them but get camera use it get a stock of pictures and then by the time you have a load you should have your monitor.

But they say and you should get as much right in camera and less on comp just crop and re size if your good enough and taking objects out.

So not every thing is affected by the monitor

I realise its best to get things right first time but given I'm a complete beginner and I'm taking shots of our baby I have to make the most of the pictures I get. I've been shooting mostly in P mode to get RAW pictures for future processing to give me the best chance of good pictures.

At the end of the day - is there anything actually wrong with your CRT???

If you have a good CRT there is not much reason to believe it will be that inaccurate in colour representation anyway?

yeah its pretty knackered to be honest. picture quality isn't great hence why i've been considering a replacement for some time.

Got my dSLR, but realised my old monitor was awful. Managed to pick a Dell 2007WFP 2nd hand and the difference is startling.

If you decide to ditch the CRT, you could do a lot worse then look for one of those Dell's, failing that, make sure you go for another IPS panel. More expensive, but worth it.

The Dell U2311H (and 22 inch model) come highly recommended in the equipment forum.

Thanks - we use Dell monitors at work and there are some new ones around so I'll have a look and see what models they are and maybe see about borrowing one to try it out.

Don't get your hopes up. Most work monitors, unless they have been purchased for specialist graphics use, will most likely be of the much cheaper variety. As others have recommended, invest in a nice IPS panel. The difference will be startling!

Probably but will have a look anyway. Not that I've got any chance of buying one in the near future, unless anyone is an expert in laying concrete on a slope so i can save some funds on that ;)
