Monitor types

I now shoot majority of my pictures in RAW format now so do s fair bit of post processing on my pc. I currently have a 26" Samsung LCD as my monitor and have noticed differences between my on screen image to the printed out version.

Can a LCD be effectively used with processing photographs or is it advised to use a proper pc monitor?

I've tried playing around with settings and things have got much better but I'm more aware of it now as I'm doing a course where I need to send in printed images as part of my assessments and am worried they may not turn out how I think they will due to the screen im using.

should be fine but it does need calibrating properly, but if you want a decent monitor you need an ips type panel, as these have better vieving angles and wider colour range.
and alot of pc monitors are lcd or lcd with led backlight.

Lcd is fine but id go for an ips panel and buy a calibration device
