My second monitor has just blacked out and although LG seem to think it probably needs a new PCB, I have found that the cost of repair is not really worth it, so I am looking at replacement.

My main monitor is a Samsung 2443BW, which came with the new PC about year + ago and I have been happy with it. The defunct one was my old LG 1810B and I felt, not so bad for the use it gets, but I am now far more into photography than I was.

I wish to ask if I will really see the difference between 1920 x 1080 resolution and 1920 x 1200. Also, should I really be looking for IPS, as I believe the Samsung Matrix is TN, ...... although it seems OK for editing, but would editing be easier with IPS?.

As the second monitor has been 18", I am looking to increase the size, but another 24" would seem a bit much, space/cost wise, so possibly 20" or maybe 22".

Any recommendations or suggestions of what to look at ............. or indeed to avoid? :shrug:
 
S-IPS/H-IPS (In Plane Switching) panels are generally considered the best overall LCD technology for image quality, color accuracy and viewing angles. £ .............. as low as they come?

If you play games a lot and need fatest response times possible, then you want a TN panel. It's colour reproduction at best is ok. It's viewing angels are also questionable. It doesn't have a full colour range such as S-IPS technology.

Whereas on the other hand S-IPS monitor are the best you can get in terms of colour reproduction and quality of panel, viewing angles etc etc.

So basically,

S-IPS = top quality, rather expensive, best colour reproduction, possibly dogged by lengthy response times.

TN = cheap, fastest response times, gamers dream. Terrible colour, viewing problems.

I can recommend the Dell 2209W, had it about x2 years, best monitor I've used. Great for editing etc. IPS panel, around £230

a very useful thread. It looks like the U2311 is the one compared with the 2009WA, which is silver fronted. Both are IPS and 1920 x 1008 and I don't suppose I will see a great deal of difference with a 1920 x 1200 resolution screen, although my Samsung 2443BW has 1200.

Moving from a second monitor of 18" to a 23" will be an improvement and side by side, as they both have a good viewing angle, should look good. I will probably do all my editing on the IPS in future.

It's just screen estate (and a slightly squarer aspect ratio at 16:10 as opposed to 16:9). My two monitors are 1920x1200 and it would feel weird going to a more letterboxy screen - especially when trying to display pictures which are even more towards a square.

Thanks for that, but surely if you are not using the FULL screen to edit by, it will not be seen moving from one to the other? Particularly if you are simply sliding from a larger to smaller screen assuming the format you are working in fits both? I was wondering if it was the quality on the screen - size for size.................. didn't think you could see the difference UNLESS the full screen was used?

You'll probably find them similar quality assuming the same panel technology. As to editing/doing anything, I'm ALWAYS using the full screen/2 screens. Would really like a 4:3 (or even 3:2 if they did them) monitor pair.
 
Just tried to get a U2311 H but at least 3 weeks wait, so am looking at other makes. Any similar ideas?

All sorted today. Managed to get one in Manchester from ARIApc. They had 12 in stock, so I picked one up and it's great. :clap: Thanks for all the help.:thumbs:
