Monopod and lens foot issue

I'm having a little trouble screwing my monopod into my new lenses lens foot. On the monopod where the screw is, there are two screws (one inside another). As you screw the monopod in, the outer screw springs back and the inner screw attaches.

Problem is, I can only get a couple of turns out of the monopod before it gets tight, but there is still a gap between the foot and 'pod. And if you turn hard enough the 'pod seems to loosen again and them tight as you turn (then loosen.... and tight) but never closes the gap.

Any ideas?

The monopod worked fine on the old lens's foot.
 
Sounds like a stripped thread from your description. Photos of the thread of each bit if kit would help with diagnosis.

Does the monopod still attach to the old lens foot ok?

Yeah still attaches to the old lens foot fine.

I'll try and get pictures....
 
yeah definitely sounds like the thread has been stripped.

If that is the case, you could tap it out to fit the larger thread on the monopod. But if you don't know what that means, get a new tripod collar.

The thread on what has been stripped? Lens? Or Monopod?

Lens is brand spanking new!!

I did read that it is advised to get a different foot for this lens Nikon 200-400 F4 VRII, but not sure what to go for.

You only really need that if you are using a head with an "Arca Swiss" style clamp (LIKE THIS), in fact I have one of these screwed onto the top of my monopod as my bigger lenses have "Arca Swiss" style plates or feet.

However if your lens is brand new I cannot think that the fault lies with it's foot.

I have just checked on my 200-400 foot and the smaller screw on the monopod head threads all the way in no problem

Hmmmm. Ok. Have you still got the original foot on the 200-400?

My monopod still screws into my old lens foot, and it looks like it's the smaller screw too.

Having a good look at the thread on the foot of the 200-400, it all looks ok.

I have the Kirk replacement foot on my 200-400, only because I have "Arca Swiss" style clamps on all my various tripod heads.

The original 200-400 foot has two threaded holes that will take the smaller screw fitting.

Just tested the monopod on both lenses again.

Works fine on old lens, using smaller screw fitting.

Won't work on new lens, using smaller screw fitting.

Bit annoying to say the least.

Is there a replacement for that foot for just a normal monopod?

If the foot that came with the lens will not take the screw fitting I would contact the place you got it from and ask for a replacement foot (they are attached by 4 allen bolts), as it sounds as if something is not as it should be.
 
Can you take a photo of the lens foot so I can see if there is an obvious problem.

They are going to collect and replace. Unfortunatley they are taking the whole lens. No biggy as I don't need it for the next week.

Fingers crossed it comes back with a working foot
 
Right, Update.

Lens went back to WHEx and they think that it is in fact an issue with the screw thread on the monopod. They tried the lens with two different monopodand they were both fine. They also reckon that my monopod and older lens are both threaded and gone, which is why they seem to both work fine with each other.

So, need replacement screws on the monopod, which is a Giottos MML3270B.

Any ideas where I can get some from?

Try Giottos LINK they may be able to sort out the part for you.
 
I phoned them earlier. Just waiting to hear back. Said they might have some in the warehouse. Fingers crossed.
 
That is the correct thread size, if that looks like the screw on your monopod it should work.

I use Gitzo stuff, and they employ a reversible stud with a 1/4 thread one end, and 3/8 thread on the other, this stud screws into the top plate.

I have no experience with Giottos stuff and how it goes together, sorry.

I have Giottos and think it is the same...

Hmmm.... ok. Though it would be something like that, but I can't seem to get the top off. There were three studs around the side, but they don't seem to do anything!

May need to man up.....!

As I said before, I have no experience of Giottos. I have checked their website but there are no clear images of the heads.
 
Terrible photo taken on the phone.

The wholes around the outside are where three scree pins were. They really don't seem to do anything. You can see the threads on the main two screws in the middle. Big one on the outside, small on the inside.

The whole head seems to be completely looked in. I've tried twisting it off in all directions. Have also looked around online (which usually solves everything!) but found nothing.

The three screw pins around the outside are locking screws if you choose to put a ball head or similar on top of it, once the head is on you screw them up from underneath and it stops it rotating loose.

I still think that plate will unscrew, unless Giottos glue them on, but I doubt that.
 
All sorted. Monopod sent off and returned with new screws. Cracking customer service. Mark even phoned me before I had the chance to phone him!

Looking forward to getting out and about and finally using it with the new lens!
