I've just got hold of a Siggy 120-300mm to use for mainly junior rugby and some surfing and I'm looking at a monopod ( Giottos 3270B 12KG max) and i don't know if I'll need something like Manfrotto MB393 head or will my ball head (10KG max) be Ok :thinking:- as i'm struggling to hand hold:shake: anyone any ideas ?

Yes the load ratings OK - its more about Lens movement once its all mounted, just wondering if the MB393 style of mount would give better control than a ball head ?
 
I've got a redsnapper ball head on my monopod, and it seems to handle the 120-300 pretty comfortably! I'm definitely the weak link, my technique is atrocious, but the support it great! If it's just one match, then I usually handhold, if it's more than one, I take the monopod!

I know what you mean about technique (or lack off), i think i'll give it a go on my tripod and see how it goes - handholding a bit of a issue at the moment as i think I've done something to my left shoulder and even holding my macro lens causes pain :shake:
