Monopod Heads

I need some recommendations please. Having now received my Manfrotto 681B with the free 234 head im keen to get a quick release head for ease of use.

I'm shooting sports primarily if that makes a difference. I've had a quick look on the Manfrotto website but there's so much choice I ended up just confusing myself. Probably going to need to be able to take a fair amount of weight but nothing larger than a 70-200 for now (but would be nice if it could take a 300/400 in the future).

Many thanks in advance.

Also, does anyone know of a really good monopod pad, i've found it digs into my shoulder a bit and whilst I could do a DIY job, i'd rather not. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Richard, do you know of something similar that would take swiss arca type plates?

Just screw one of these M'frotto QR plates on to your existing 234 head, or something similar, for twenty quid http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-323-rectangular-quick-release-plate/p11032

You don't have to spend much on a monopod to get something serviceable, as they don't need the rigidity like a tripod does. RedSnapper does everything pretty well for very little money.

I got a Manfrotto 496RC2 head with my 681B (and free 234 head).
If I had noticed the QR plate recommended above I reckon I would have tried it instead of the 496.
The 496 RC2 is no lightweight.
The 681B + 234 comfortably handles either of my Nikon bodies + 300mm f4 Nikkor (and TC if needed too).
681B + 234 + 323 QRP sounds like a good combination.

Thanks guys, I did see the 224 RC head but just wondered if there were any others worth considering.

Any ideas on a pad?

Just been browsing google and apparently Canon used to make (still make?) the red monopod pads, but they're a bit tricky to get hold of. Does anyone know of some in stock?

Ade,

I used the Arca Swiss type adapter from Cameragearuk on Ebay to convert my Manfrotto plates to Arca Swiss. They are certainly compatible with the Kirk and RRS plates and the stops on the plates work.

They sell a variety of plates also at reasonable prices. Delivery is good and they are based in Norfolk. I had an email conversation some while back when he had run out of a particular adapter and he was looking around his workshop for some old ones to get me out of trouble; great service.

Here is a link to ones that I have bought:

Apologies for the long URL.

Cheers,

Paul.

Thanks Paul, looks exactly what I want..........

I have two of those, from the same source. Cheapest Arca clamps I could find and as said, v good service and quality.

There are lots of these things about, and some of them have different mounting holes. Some are 1/4in, some 3/8in, some threaded, some counter sunk etc. That one has a flush 3/8in thread, whereas the other Marumi one from the same place is 1/4in I think and comes with a plate and a sprung safety pin. Just check the differences before you buy.
