Monopod recommendations

Apologies if this has been done to death but,

I have around £50 to spend on a monopod. Now I know you get what you pay for but does anyone have any recommendations on the best bang for my buck?

I went for the Red Snapper one with the ball head. Was about £40 shipped IIRC. Very happy with it nice and solid and well made. I actually used the ball head as my main tripod head as well.

If you look in the trade section somewhere there's a code for 10% off for TP members which I didn't have when I got mine.
 
I can't make a specific recommendation, having only used one monopod in my life - a perfectly fine Manfrotto 679 to which I've added a Manfrotto 234rc tilt head - but I'm very happy with the combo as far as performance is concerned. Certainly it is robust and plenty tall enough for me (6' in shoes) and will easily support a 1D3 and 100-400 lens. It's also very quick to adjust in height when moving about on sloping terrain. It's rated to 10Kg for the monopod.

The thing to consider is whether weight is an issue, or the shortest height, or the tallest, or whether you want a head, and if that should be a tilt or ball head, and whether you want a quick release mechanism, possibly that retains compatibility with an existing QR system. Since I have numerous Manfrotto RC2 bits attached to various bodies, lenses and ball heads, it makes sense for me to have the 234RC tilt head fo rmy monopod. For you there may be better (and cheaper) options.

Certainly the 679 is a nice piece of kit, but with three leg sections it does not pack down really small and, made of aluminium, is not especially light.
 
thanks for taking the time to reply guys. some things for me to have a look at.

for information im a short 5ft 8" ;) at present my longest lens is 70-200 but a 300 or maybe 400 L could be on the cards. the combo would be used for autosport. wheight isnt too much of an issue.......i maybe short but im sturdy enough lol.
 
I use a Manfrotto and most of the guys I know or have worked with use Manfrotto. This isn't to say that other makes are not up to the job.
