Hi All
thinking of getting a monopod (getting older with the 'shakes'), Manfrotto
680b for now and maybe a head later?? Any good......too much??
Apreciate your advice

Hi Terry.
Any Manfrotto is a good choice, depends what you are using on it, and what you are using it for. I have the Giottos myself, but only because it fit the bill and I got it at a very good price from Amazon. Never used a head with it, as mostly I have my 70-200mm L on when I use it, and for portrait use the lens swivels.
However, when I need to travel light, on the hills etc, I have a lightweight Cullman monopod with ball head, for landscape use.
So ask yourself, do you really need a head before you buy one.

Wontolla.......Using a D90 with a nikkor 55-300VR, just thought if I got a pan/tilt head it would make it easier for moving!! I am only 5ft and it gets a little heavy after a while........or do you think I am talking out of my.......!!

:lol: So, you want to make it easier/lighter to move, and your adding more weight by using a monopod!! The pod weighs in at almost 1 1/2 kilos, so you are adding 3+ pounds to the total weight. Yes, you can slip the pod/camera onto your shoulder, but it's still got to be carried. Also, if you use VR most of the time, then you normaly dont use it on a monpod, or, you switch it off.

Think you might be saving me a few quid!!! When you think of if that way. Was just thinking that holding the camera/lens up, the pod would take the weight!! think I will have to do a bit of weight lifting to strenghten my arms instead!! Also dont forget that the wife would be carrying the heavy stuff:lol:

Terry - same as you I struggle with weight and the shakes sometimes so I bought the Manfrotto MMC3-01 below to see how I got on a with a monopod having never used one. It's very compact and light and I find I'm now using it a lot. I also got myself a basic manfrotto quick release head to go with it. The tripod rarely gets a look in now! For the price it's a cheapish way of seeing how you get on with one.

If I'm out for a days hiking and have the camera with me I always take along my CF monopod - definitely useful for that added stability especially when the wind is trying to blow you off the mountain tops!! I use mine with a 234RC head, I find it too cumbersome without one. I also always leave stabilisation turned on, only turn off stabilisation when using a tripod
