Hi , i am considering buying a monopod and am needing some advice. I don't really want to spend a lot of money so will I can tell the difference in quality between the Camlink one for sale at Jessops for around £20 and saving for a Manfrotto one for around £40-£50 . I would think the build quality will be better but will it make any difference in image quality ?

My old £20 Jessops monopod, made of aluminium tube, resonates quite noticeably.

My newer carbon fibre Manfrotto one doesn't (and I've also equipped it with a head with the same Arca-style clamp that I use on my tripod).

A vibrating camera support isn't a huge amount of use. I think you can work out which is better IMO. :)

mine was a tenner off ebay! :)

never used it yet, however it was still a bargain

I bought a decent quality monopod at focus2010 and fitted in with a manfrotto quick release head so I can easily switch between monopod and tripod. You find that on cheap tripods the joints are not as high a quality and can give movement. This can become even more of a problem when it is a monopod as there is only the one leg.

manfrotto 679B is a good bet, I've used them before and they're good...about £30 and rock solid :)

I just ordered one of the Manfrotto 685B monopods from Warehouse Express on Friday night.

As far as I know it's the only monopod out there that provides a "quick release" of sorts for quickly adjusting the height.

It seems quite highly rated by many folks who use them, although a few have complained about durability. Yuri Arcurs uses one, because of the quick height adjustment mechanism, but he goes through 'em very quickly.

I've got the Redsnapper monopd/mini ballhead combo & it holds my 50D + grip + 150-500 pretty solid
