I am after getting something at the longer end of the focal range like 300/400mm but I hate using a tripod and it will probably for moving objects more often than not. Does anyone have a good recommendation for one that is cheapish but will handle a fair bit weight and is usable. I have a slik pro tripod. Can't remember the model number but its one of the higher end ones and it would be good if the quick release plates matched as I have 2 bodies so it would give me a spare.
 
I've been using a Manfrotto 681B for years with my 500mm f4 and it has had no problems. From memory it cost me £40 from Jessops.

Before getting one, have you tried using it without for a while? I assumed when I got my first big lens (sigma 120-300), that a monopod would be essential.... After spending a day with it and a 1D around my neck, I was amazed that it really wasn't too bad.

A good strap can really make a difference too, and doesn't get in the way like I found a monopod did.
