Can anyone help me to identify this creature. It is about 60mm long from its head to the end of its abdomen not including that huge projection from its rear. I've never seen one of these things before and I didn't want to approach it too closely :runaway: so I had to take the picture using a 70-300mm. Any help in recognition would be much appreciated.

 
No idea ,but its one big beastie I wouldn't be getting too close to either
 
Thanks for that. I hope it is harmless and that it hasn't left any little surprises waiting to hatch out. Just to give you an idea of scale, this is how it met its fate!

 
That is quite some meal for a small spider. :eek: Nice captures.

Here is a different species of sawfly using its oviposter on the stem of a rose bush.

 
Love the clarity on that shot jomike. I'm sure I could have done better if I'd used my macro lens but I was too chicken to go close in as I didn't know if that oviposter was some sort of weapon. I was yella' :puke:
