is there a golden rule?
I have a D90 with an 18-200mm VR lens, I usually get outside set it up on a tripod then fiddle around for ages in the dark with settings until my fingers get unbareably cold, try a few shots then give up, any one any recommended settings?

daylight for the moon...

if you are using 100 iso then 1/100 at f11 with some bracketing

extrapolate for other speeds and iso

if you are on tripod...then you can tend towards lower speeds..

autofocus should work ok...

enjoy...and take a mug of bovril out there for the hands

Biggest problem I had was camera shake on pressing the shutter. Given I didnt have a remote release (just bought one though :D ) I set the camera on the tripod and used the self timer to fire it - the delay in shutter press and release was enough for the shake to settle down
