more power consumption on longer lens?

hopefully in the next few days i should be taking delivery of the latest addition to my sigma collection, the 120-300.

now this got me thinking, and please feel free to call me an idiot if im wrong, ive never had any power issues with the 70-200 but do the larger lenses consume more battery power? im thinking more/larger glass and larger motors/mechanisms?

if so, i might have to cave in and get a grip.

I guess it doesn't depend as such on the length of the lens, more the max aperture? Bigger lenses won't necessarily have more elements to move, but a larger aperture will have larger glass? Also age of the lens, will newer lenses have more economical motors than older designs?

I agree with the age of the Lens having a definite noticeable effect on battery life, I can shoot all day with my Sony Lens but my Beercan goes through the batteries like there is no tomorrow.

I would think the age of the lens as has been mentioned, but depending on the design the longer lens might be heavier, therefore more resistance on the motors etc, also the quality of the motors might effect it, for example an L series lens might have more advanced electronics than a cheaper lens which could affect power consumption....

Deffinately different lenses will affect the battery differently but I don't think it will be as simple as longer = more power consumption
