Motherboard won't detect DDR2

I tried to update the RAM on my PC, I currently have a weedy 768mb DDR RAM. So I bought 2 x 1GB Crucial DDR2, I fitted it and all I got was beeping at start up. I thought it must have been incompatible, so I then bought some 2 x 1GB Kingston DDR2, the exact part number is in the qualified vendors list for my ASUS P5VDC-MX motherboard, but again all I get is beeping. Any ideas on what I can do to get it to work please?

Have a look at page 1-17 of the manual it states what memory to use.

Beeps generaly mean it hasn't detected the memory correctly

Are you sure you have the modules pushed in all the way? They are sometimes hard to push right in. Also, can you enter the BIOS and see how much memory it can see.

i had an old asrock that had DDR and DDR2 compatibility (not at the same time mind), AGP and PCI express slots. although cheap and cheerful it was handy as an upgradable system

back on topic, as mike said if youre running DDR and DDR2 thats probably your issue. if youre just running it with the new DDR2 try one stick at a time, you might have a faulty stick.

If you look at the manual as per my link above you can mix the memory but they can only fit in the correct slots.

If the machine only beeps I'd love to know how you get in the bios to do anything ?

eurgh..

seriously though it will probably speed things up to rip out the DDR completely and just run the DDR2. otherwise the DDR2 will be trying to run at the same speed and timings as the older stuff and it could cause more trouble than its worth.

I agree with Neil about using only DDR2.

Thanks for the replies, I am only using DDR2 in the correct slots (it has 2 slots for DDR and another 2 for DDR2). I'm 100% certain they are fitted correctly, I have tried just fitting one stick and tried the one stick in both slots at a time and still nothing (and thats with trying both Crucial and Kingston memory). I can't even get in the bios as the pc doesn't boot at all, just beeps. Any other advice gratefully received.

Yes Gary its working fine with DDR.

I've not read the manual, so maybe shooting in the dark a bit:
Is the memory type dependent on the CPU?
I seem to recall having a mb that was like that.

Neil, I'm not using DDR and DDR2 simultaneously, when I try the DDR2 sticks I take the DDR sticks out.

Neil, the first I got was Crucial CT2KIT12864AA667. The next lot was Kingston 1GB KVR533D2N4/1G which is listed in the motherboard manual as being compatible.
