Hi all
I am going to a small motocross event on sunday and am looking for a few tips, I am pretty new to the dslr photography game and am on a steep learning curve , I have a sony a200 with kit lens and a sigma 70-300 weather forcast looks ok and i should be able to get fairly close.
Was wondering if anyone could give me any advise as to what shutter speeds aperture etc, I know i am asking a lot but any advise would be appreciated
Thank you very much in advance

For most shots a shutter speed of between 1/320 and 1/500th will be fine. At the longer end of the sigma I think you're at F5.6 which will be fine so mess about with the ISO to get the shutter speed.

If you're fancying trying some panning you'll be lucky to get anything decent below about 1/150th. You're not only working against lateral motion but vertical as well. If you want to experiment with flash you might get it a good bit lower though.

the good thing with motorcross (also same with rallying) is you dont need too use a slow shutter speed to show action in the shot you just need to pick a good spot where the bike is kicking out a good spray behind it (out of corners is aways good) as this will add the movement needed to the shot and you can then use a faster shutter speed to get a clearer pic.

Don't forget to post your results Billybob as I'd love to see them.
