Hi ,
I'm going to motogp in Qatar, night time floodlite race and need advice on which lenses would be best.
I'm considering the sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO EX DG OS HSM, new or 2nd hand Canon 70-200 IS 11 USM
I have a sigma 170-500 F5-6.3 already but may consider the Canon EF 100-400 IS 11 USM 2nd hand or a new Sigma F5-6.3 DG OS HSM S.
This is a one time deal so want the best pics I can get. Canon body is a 50D.

Thanks for any input.

The lighting is bright there! I'd get a 7d and take the 200mm

Have you shot bikes before? 200mm may be a bit short unless you are trackside. My Sigma 70-200mm is great at Cadwell but that is close.

I've shot at silverstone with 80-200 on crop sensor

Yes, shot bikes before but just want the best lenses for this trip. I know 200 will be short for tracks but good for road racing in Ireland, so would get more use from it. Really want to concentrate on quality images as best I can.

As you are Canon I've seen a lot use the 100-400mm so that would be my choice. Closest I've come to road racing is Olivers Mount which the 70-200mm was perfect, I even found the 70mm end was too long on a crop but I picked up an FX so it's D300+300mm/1.4tc and D3+70-200mm.

I would go with 300mm F2.8

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 might a good option. Though I would take my EF 100-400mm MkII.

I would think a 120-300 would be a better option, better too long than too short, though with a f2.8 there is the weight consideration. I've used my Sigma 120-300 at Donnington and with a 1.4 and I suspect you may well be further from the action than you can get at Donnington.

i think google earth has a ruler, so maybe worth using that and compairing the distances you will be at in quatar to the actual bikes (or best guess) then measure up some track your familer with, so you can get a idea of what focal length is needed

Get a Sigma 150-600C

It is light weight and hand hold able all day, very quick to focus and should cover all the focal lengths you want. With the money saved by getting just one very competitive priced lens upgrade your body. 7Dii is far better than original but the mki is still very capable or a second hand 1Div.

That would be the lens I would take along with a 24-105.

I have a 70-200f2.8ii and that would be tempting with both 1.4 & x2 extenders but then I would be gutted if 500 or 600mm was needed which with bikes is possible. My 120-300S was last on the list as carrying it to the airport let alone round a new track is enough to put me off.

The 150-600S looks the business over the C but is very heavy. Once you cover a c in neoprene or a rain cover you will not be able to tell them apart including the images.

The 100-400ii is an excellent lens also but 600mm does come in handy.
