I have a 300mm f2.8 which I use around Outlon Park with some success, however I am now thinking about getting either a 300mm f4 or a 400mm f5.6 but as yet undecided.

Most of the time the 300mm is great however over the last year I have been thinking that that extra reach of the 400mm would be benificial.

I could always go 300mm + a 1.4 converter

So stick with the 300mm or go for a longer reach lens?

Crop is not an issue as it would be used on a full frame camera.

Not sure if i am right but adding a 1.4 teleconverter to your lens would give you 300 x 1.4 = 420mm F4. (One stop loss).

Would this be suitable .....

Of course it all depends on your budget. I can't see why you would need a 300f4 as you already got the 300f2.8. A TC is a good option but it might slow focus down slightly. Have you considered a 500f4? Also what system do you use?

I use a variety of systems but this would be for Canon. The 500 f4 is out of budget, the 300 f4 and 400 f5.6 can both be had for less than £1000 used. :)

HMM!! Good idea will have to go and price that up :D

Add a 1.4x TC... 420mm at f4, spot on and a hundred and something quid if you get the Kenko Pro (which I've never seen anyone say is any worse than the Canon one)

I use a 1.4x on my 300 F4 IS and it works a treat. There is only a marginal decrease in AF speed and the quality loss is equally marginal.

Which 300mm do you have?

I'd go with the 1.4 converter, your 300 2.8 takes them very well and I doubt you will notice the drop in speeds too much!

Considered a Bigma, or does it need to be a prime....

Thought about it but I really really like primes and still use them alot

Fair point however my 300mm f2.8 is manual focus and Nikon and is fantastic but I just fancied a AF version hence the 300mm f4. (I will still be keeping the Nikon as it is afantasic lens)

Ahhh ok, so you have Nikon... well, there is no Nikon 400 f5.6 for starters.

Your 300 2.8 for motorsport... manual focus... hmm well, they used to use manual focus lenses in motorsport, so I guess its possible... but you might find some kind of AFS lens better.

The Nikkor 300 f4 AFS is pretty neat and will happily take a 1.4x or 1.7x TC on a D300...

I have Nikon and Canon but for digital I use Olympus :D

My Nikon and Canon bodies are film and yes I still use film black and white for motorsport.

I realise that the prime lens selection for Nikon is limited which is why I was after a lens for the Canon as my EOS1n ES has quicker AF than my Nikon F4s but not as quick as the Olympus E3

Variety is the spice of life

Ok, shall we start again... try writing "I have XYZ camera and I want a long lens for motorsport", then we can help you.

You have thank you

I am going to go for the Canon 300mm f4 and x1.4 tele convertor as this will give me a 420mm f5.6 which will suit just fine.

Yes I have a lot of kit and lens to go with it and sorry if it was not 100% clear from the out set but it was the Canon film body I was wanting to kit out this time.

Oh ok, I used to use that combo on my Canon stuff and it works just fine, as it does currently on my Nikon combo (obviously each uses their own lenses!)

The Canon 300 f4 IS is a nice bit of kit, you will enjoy that!
