This doesnt make sense.

I'm an amateur commissioned from a paper, I get paid

if your getting paid then your there as a profesional...

This doesnt make sense.

By professional I mean someone earning his living from photography, by amateur someone earning his living from some other profession I wasn't able to edit the post as was writing from a mobile device, which option doesn't make sense? as I know people from pretty much all of this category they make sense to me, but maybe I wrote them badly

ahh i see what you mean now. Someone who normally gets paid for photography but in this case works for free.

yeah basically last option is for those who are working photographers, however either just started and unable to find a publication paying them or photographers doing motorsports jobs FOC cause of their passion but doing other editorial photography as main income.

umh, probably your 2 options are much more straightforward:bonk:

would still like to know if anyone claiming to be a professional are giving images for free to websites

I'd claim to be a professional, and I do give away photos to websites. Apart from maybe one or two, I dont think there are any websites that are in a position to pay, so I help them out.

#2 fits me perfect.... but just me it seems? :)

now if this was a poll taken at for example a BTCC race, then it would look a bit different to what it does now!

Correct..I officialy cover motorsport for my local paper so option #2 is me and I voted.. however I have never been to a car race track (other than stock cars) .. But I do cover motor sport

i'm none of those options. Certainly no local papers I've ever come across will pay for national level motorsport.

I don't consider myself a professional, i earn from the events i cover, but it certainly doesn't represent over 40% or whatever the MSA consider the definition of a professional.

Certainly BTCC or frankly any other series have maybe 90% amateurs. BTCC is particually bad as it is a popular series. Without being rude to photographers of other series - they are just as easy to get accredited for (same single event application with the circuits) but less people want to go to these events. I bet if lewis hamilton did a 1 off BGT round you would see similar numbers suddenly ask for accreditation (and get it).

the question is about motorsport.. no mention of the level..

True, however the level is very relevant - in my experiance papers simply wont pay for national level motorsport images. According to the poll, 3 people would disagree.

I dont fit any of those descriptions as i dont earn through my chosen paper, but through other clients. I believe this is the case for 90% of the photographers i talk to at events - if indeed they earn at all.

It is curious that somebody get paid from a website, unless its andrewc, who may earn from advertising on his website

That would be me however it's not strictly true it was just the closest fit.

I've not voted!

I have some advertising on my Racing Exposure website which just about covers the hosting costs. I, with my Norwich Photo hat on are a contributor, as are some of you other guys and gals from TP (you know who you are!)

The teams pay me, simples. I then put together media and PR packages, disseminate news and images through my network of local and national press, international press, specialist press and websites, most of whom publish (they get the releases and photos if they've asked or published stuff in the past) and none of whom pay for it - that's why the team pay, so the publication can get it for free and are more likely to print it (regardless of whether it's a newsworthy story, unless it's an exclusive nipple slip of some trashy teen z-list celeb they aren't going to pay).

The only Motorsport related photo I have ever been paid for was an exclusive of Liz Hurley and Shane Warne (neither of which are related to Motorsport) at Goodwood Festival of Speed (there we go, the tenuous Motorsport connection) which most daily's picked up and paid handsomely for.

You don't need to be getting paid/commissioned by someone to be accredited as media at some events though..
